Statement of the Problem
The study was conducted to answer the following questions:
1. How does cough affect your daily activities in life?
2. Can we produce our own carbocisteine (herbal medicine which cures cough) out of lagundi leaves?
3. Is it safe drinking the lagundi syrup made out of lagundi leaves?
4. Is there any significance difference between the occurrence of cough before and after giving lagundi syrup?
5. Is lagundi only a remedy for coughs?

Hypothesis
In this study, the researchers hypothesized in the investigation that:
1. Coughing can either alter level of concentration of a person thus making him/her unable to perform usual task.
2. We can produce carbocisteine lagundi syrup out of lagundi leaves, brown sugar, and vinegar.
3. Lagundi is safe for use for children and adults and no adverse reaction has been reported. However, moderate use is recommended for pregnant women, and treatment should not exceed one week.
4. There is no significant difference between the frequency of cough before and after giving lagundi syrup.
5. No. Lagundi is taken to cure coughs, asthma, and other respiratory concerns.

Related Studies
Lagundi (scientific name: Vitex negundo) is a shrub that grows in the Philippines. It is one of the ten herbal medicines endorsed by the Philippine Department of Health as an effective herbal medicine with proven therapeutic value. Commonly known in the Ilocos region as dangla, lagundi has been clinically tested to be effective in the treatment of colds, flu, bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, and pharyngitis. Studies have shown that Lagundi can prevent the body’s production of leukotrienes, which are released during an asthma attack. Lagundi contains Chrysoplenol D, a substance with anti-histamine and muscle relaxant

A cough reflex has both sensory (afferent) and motor (efferent) components. Pulmonary irritant receptors (cough receptors) in the epithelium of the respiratory tract are sensitive to both mechanical and chemical stimuli. Stimulation of the cough receptors by dust or other foreign particles produces a cough, which is necessary to remove the foreign material from the respiratory tract before it reaches the lungs. A long drawn and deep inhalation followed by a complete closure of the glottis, which results in a strong exhalation that suddenly punches the glottis open and sends a blast of air through the upper respiratory passages.…

Agave syrup comes from the agave plant, which is grown almost exclusively in Mexico (3). In the past several thousands of years, natives in Mexico used agave for medicine and as a sweetener, which they boiled a few hours and did nothing else to it (2). This brought about the misconception of today’s agave nectar or syrup – most people think of it as natural like the agave of the past. Many agave syrup bottles are even labelled with the story of agave in ancient times (2). The blue agave plant is the best choice for agave syrup, and this is the same plant from which tequila is made (1). The plant must grow for 7-14 years, and then is separated, the leaves are removed from the core (3). The core or root of the plant is made up of starch and inulin, which consists of fructose chains (2). Since inulin isn’t sweet, it needs to be converted or hydrolyzed to fructose (3). The core is smashed to extract the syrup, and then must be processed with heat, enzymes, and chemicals (3). The process can be compared to the process of creating high-fructose corn syrup (2). It may include caustic acids, filtration chemicals and genetically modified enzymes (2).…
