In Leslie Webster’s essay “Archaeology and Beowulf,” Webster starts the paper off by talking about how the Old English translation of Beowulf has actually caused a lot of misunderstanding because of everyone’s contemporary perceptions of the way it was in the past. She then goes on to talk about the warrior culture, which she refers it to being the things or traditions warriors would do such as ceremonies and burials. Webster then transitions to describing the different things about Heorot in the book Beowulf and it’s structure. After that, Webster covers the importance of weapons and how rare having armor was. In the next section Webster basically talks about the different types of helmets and their significance in history. Webster continues her discussion of armor when she begins to talk about the mail-coats and how only certain people wore them. Next, Webster talks about the use of shields and how common they actually were when comparing them to the special mail-coats. Staying on the topic of weapons, Webster talks about swords and the connotation people have of them in different stories and poems. Webster went on to talk about transportation and said that ships were the main transportation and other ways of transportations land-wise were by horse or foot. Finally in the last section, Webster describes the importance of burials in Beowulf and other narratives and how they usually tie together a theme of everything.…

Another great benefit of dog leotards is that they can help control the temperature of your dog. In the winter months even your pooch might need a little bit of extra protection. A dog with wet fur can freeze, making your playful pooch very, very cold. A leotard will help keep the cold air away from your dog and make its morning runs much more enjoyable.…

The last invention I will talk about is Chain mail. Chain mail was the type of metal armor worn by the middle ages soldiers. Before Chain mail, all the soldiers would wear leather. Chain mail was flexible due to being made from brass and iron but according to this site, steel was the most popular item used to create chain mail. Some of the advantages of chain mail was, it was flexible, easy to make, easy and fast to repair, cheap and can fit all men of any size, and was easy to move around in. It gave a large amount of protection against getting cut or poked by a blade. It helped stop skin being pierced through. Chain mail was not effective against bombs and…

The sun is approximately 92.96 million miles away from Planet Earth. It is amazing how the sun is so far away yet can be felt so easily on a sunny day. Dermatologists frequently recommend lots of sunblock when enjoying the Vitamin D. Sunblock helps to protect the skin from sun damage. A great way to at least shield the eyes from the sun's radiant beam is to wear a hat. If there are any women who don't really care for the classic baseball cap, an alternative might be a well-fitting military style hat!…

At the time that Beowulf was written, the culture that produced the poem, the Anglo-Saxons, were a pagan culture. The Catholic Church was trying to spread its beliefs to other parts of the world. The Anglo-Saxons were a definite target. Many of the texts that we have out of that time period were written by Catholic monks. In Beowulf there are many references to pagan and Christian beliefs. These beliefs neither contradict, nor outshine each other. Rather, the monks writing the work interjected some Christian ideas in order to try and sell Christianity to the people that were familiar with the tale. The pagan and Christian ideas are perfectly laced together to introduce some of the ideas of Christianity to a pagan people.…

I’m writing to you from Valley Forge in Pennsylvania. Life here is horrible. There’s a lot shortages of everything from food to clothing to medicine. My men are sick from disease, hunger, and exposure. Right now, were camped in crude log cabins and have endured cold conditions while the Redcoats warmed themselves in colonial homes. Naked and starving as they are we cannot enough admire the incomparable patience and fidelity of the soldiery. My men are suffering, but they are so loyal, and even though they are naked and hungry, they will do their best to fight for their country.…

In “The Things They Carried,” by Tim O’Brien the theme of “carrying” both physical and emotional objects by the main characters can be found in the novel. While these men carry the same standard physical army gear, they differentiate with personal tangible and intangible items. From Lieutenant Cross’s responsibility of his men, to Henry Dobbin’s girlfriend’s pantyhose for its magic, each man faced the war with these things attached.…

My grandfather, a veteran of the US Military, was a husband and father of 6 sons. Our family has never been rich nor wealthy, but my Grandfather was a hard worker and made many treasures for my Grandmother. When I was just a little girl my Grandma told me the story of how I came to be named Tiffany, my Grandfather insisted because he was very ill that he named the last grandchild he will get to meet. Then she brought out a beautiful chest, not a big chest but a petite one you could put on a shelf or dresser and gave it to me, said she knew he would want me to have it. It was hand made by my Grandfather for my Grandmother for their first anniversary. I cherish the chest, not because it is fancy or expensive, it is a memory of my Grandfather and Grandmother’s love. The box represents our family bond and how no matter rich or poor there is something beautiful if you just open your mind and create it. Beauty isn’t only found in diamonds and pearls, it’s in family, love, and thoughtfulness.…
