Mahtabs Story Script:

Slide 1 – ‘Mahtab’s Story’ is an eventful novel, full of powerful and demanding moments. Throughout this novel Mahtab learns new responsibilities and takes control and learns how to grow up in her dark and complicated story. Slide 2 – ‘Mahtabs Story’ told in third person, has the author Libby Gleeson telling the story from an outside perspective by letting the audience know from ‘Mahtab ached.’ The novel is through Mahtabs eyes even though the story isn’t true; this presents Mahtab as a fictional character. Having a limited perspective of the story helps us identify Mahtab as a more naïve teenage girl and gives a more in-depth description of her and lets the audience see things from her perspective.

Slide 3 – Mahtab’s childhood growing up was very harsh; she had a whole different background and culture to what a normal child would grow up in. Her childhood was tortured by the unfairness of laws that she has to obey and the cruelty living amongst the country. Mahtab was brought into the adult world at a very young age, which means she has to learn adult ways and choices very quickly and to adapt to the culture presented.

Slide 4 – The description of the setting that is put in the novel describes the horrendous conditions that Mahtab is living in. Afghanistan is a country full of war and depression, a place where no child should grow up in. Oppression and restriction are displayed when Mahtab explains what she is experiencing during her long trip on the painful truck. ‘She rubbed her freezing hands together and pressed them into her mouth, sucking the life back into them…all she could taste was diesel and dust.’ Also the personification is presented with Mahtab desires (‘Mahtab wanted to…yell as if her heart and lungs would burst. But her throat was a closed and choking trapdoor.’) Mahtabs pain and needs demonstrates how her childhood is presented in the novel and the challenges she will have to face.
