Abstract

Mahogany Magic Polish is made from mahogany seed hull charcoal, beeswax, virgin coconut oil, olive oil and vinegar. This polish produces a different variant of colors depends on the variation of ingredients and pattern of wood fiber. This polish also is safe and biodegradable. The researcher used mahogany seed hull charcoal mixed with vinegar used in soaking steel wool to produce black stain. Black stain is blended in olive oil, coconut oil and beeswax to enrich the polish. Vinegar is a natural preservative and it can also wipe out dust. Oil can smoothen and polish the wood or furniture. The researcher finds the mahogany seed hull in school as garbage so it is used in this research to recycle, reuse and reduce garbage. The researcher can also do further study to produce black stain from mahogany seed hull charcoal, to lengthen the life span of this polish and do experiment to achieve the proper ratio of the materials used in this research.

Miracle Polish is a story about a man who buys a bottle of “Miracle Polish” from a salesman who goes from house to house. From the moment the narrator begins using the Miracle Polish to clean one of the few mirrors in his house, his obsession for his own reflection – and his girlfriend Monica’s – led him to buying more mirrors. This goes on up to the point when Monica gets fed up with the narrator, for he is more appealed to the Monica in the mirror rather than the real Monica. The narrator then insists that he wants the real Monica, up to the point that he pours away the Miracle Polish in the sink and destroys all the mirrors in his house. Unfortunately, Monica leaves him and he hopes the salesman will come back to sell him more Miracle Polish. The perspective of this story is first person narrative, and the narrator of this story is not given a name. Because of the lack of a name, therefore the narrator is open to be anyone.…

I think the life expectancy change from 69.2 in 1950 to 78.9 in 2007 because . In 1950 America was still just getting started and they were buliding a lot of buildings which causes air pollution so people might have died from contaminated air. Also in the 1950's people were still moving to America from other places so their diseases could of spread to other people that had never had it so their body didn't know how to fight it so they died from sickness. Also they didn't have the technology to cure diseases or vaccinate them.…

On the surface, “Miracle Polish” mirrors the myth of Narcissus, following a man who, after discovering the effects of a mysterious polish, becomes obsessed with his own reflection. However, within the fantasy of Steven Millhauser’s short story lies a very real and morbid subtext. “Miracle Polish” presents an allegory of drug abuse and substance addiction, using symbols to control the story’s significance and depth. Millhauser effectively creates an allegory with the use of two primary symbolizations. The identity of these symbols is easiest to distinguish during the climax of the story, where the narrator smashes his mirrors and turns on Monica. This moment in the story illuminates further meaning throughout the rest of “Miracle Polish,” exposing the representation of symbols and supporting the purpose of the short story.…

While medical treatments were far from safe and helpful, they were certainly more advanced than those of previous eras. There was also newer technology, like the gramophone, the telephone, the telegram, trains, and many more. These technologies changed the way people lived, and made it easier and faster to do things. However, some people, confused by the rapidly changing world, resisted the change, and chose to stick to more tradition ideals that they were used to. And of course, there was the industrial age, meaning more and more energy (no pun intended) went into machines and factories. Many people also started moving to the city, increasing the population a bit too…

Dr. Sharon Moalem's New York Times Bestseller Survival of the Sickest discusses how diseases and health conditions of the modern era have a direct connection with the results of evolutionary pressures of early human life. As the modern homo sapiens first evolved from the continent of Africa over 200,000 years ago, the species would be forced to slowly develop new characteristics and adapt to changes over thousands of years. As humans began to move out of the African continent and settle in various parts of Earth, our early ancestors' tolerance for different environments would inevitably be challenged. Beneficial genetic mutations would be present in an individual and as he reproduced, those with the mutation slowly but surely outnumbered those…

In the past 150 years, Dahlgren and Whitehead's social models have become more relevant due to the living condition having improved. The rate of the commutable diseases has significantly decreased while the percentage of non-commutable disease such as the obesity epidemic, increased (Browen, 2005). As mention above, the biomedical model is able to detect what substances caused the obesity epidemic, but cannot determine the social change such as food consumption, which influence personal choice as effective as Dahlgren and Whitehead’s model (Cockerham, 2007; Dahlgren & Whitehead, 1991). Before the early 20th century, the living conditions were not ideal, therefore, the biomedical model was more relevant as diseases were mostly caused by poor…
