Ms.Bernard Act 3 Summary 1-20-14
Banquo talks of how Macbeth is now king because Duncan was murdered and his sons ran away making them seem guilty. He talks of the witches’ prophecy and how for Macbeth it was coming true but as for him it was not. Macbeth addresses Banquo as his most important guest and asks if he will be taking a ride later. To which Banquo responds yes, and he’ll be taking Fleance with him. Macbeth bids them farewell and they leave. Macbeth orders murderers in fear of Banquo to kill Banquo and Fleance. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth talk of things they must do to keep their new positions. Macbeth is bent on killing everyone who poses a threat, he feels as though he has complicated things so much that everyone is after his head. When they get to the park, murderers ask why the third murderer came and settle things between themselves, they ask themselves where Banquo and Fleance are. Finally they found Banquo and Fleance and attacked but failed because Fleance runaway. When Macbeth is getting ready for dinner when the murderers come in and Macbeth talks to them asking if it is done. The murderers tell him about it and how Fleance escaped. Lady Macbeth comes in and asks Macbeth why he is not eating. Macbeth goes to sit and eat but Banquo’s ghost is sitting in his place. The ghost leaves and Lady Macbeth tells his guests not to pay attention to him, that he has a rare condition. At the end of the Act 3, Lennox and another lord talk of how Macbeth has taken the crown wrongfully and committed murder.

Shakespeare creates a scene in Macbeth in which his conscious comes into play to mess with his head and to show the audience the insanity that is ever present in the man. After killing the king and becoming the king Macbeth realizes that the witches prophecy came true, the prophecy that was stated in Act 1 Scene 3, where Macbeth and Banquo are told that they will become leaders. Macbeth is told he shall be king and yet Banquo is told that his children shall be the kings after Macbeth. Banquo is killed strictly for the reason that he has a suspicion that Macbeth killed Duncan. He could get Macbeth into trouble and ruin his future. The witches’ prophecies describe how Banquo will be a father to a future line of kings. Macbeth hearing this, believes it is a threat at him and uses his urge for power to set out for the killing of Fleance. Macbeth says, “To leave no rubs nor botches in the work—Fleance, his son, that keeps him company, Whose absence is no less material to me Than is his father’s” (Shakespeare). Macbeth becomes more isolated over the course of Acts Three and Four because he has crumbled. After Duncan’s murder Macbeth pulled himself away from many people or became distant, including Banquo and Lady Macbeth. Macbeth’s new position as king, gives him the power to delegate his needs to other people which he uses to hire murderers to slaughter Banquo.
