1. PURPOSE: The purpose of this SOP is to address the clearing, disassembling, cleaning, and inspecting for serviceability, lubricating, and reassembling of the M4A1 carbine.

2. APPLICABILITY: This SOP applies to all personnel assigned to 3rd Platoon.

3. REFERENCES:

a. Lubricate Order (LO)

b. STP 21–1–SMCT

c. TM 9–1005–319–10

d. DA Form 2404

4. RESPONSIBILITIES: Every soldier assigned to 3rd Platoon, HHD, 212th CSH, will be responsible for properly clearing, disassembling, cleaning, inspecting for serviceability, lubricating and reassembling of their carbine.

5. PROCEDURES:

a. Clearing the carbine

(1) Point the muzzle in a safe direction.

(2) Remove the magazine.

(3) Turn the selector to safe.

(4) Lock the bolt to the rear.

(5) Visually inspect the receiver and chamber to ensure they contain no ammunition.

(6) Allow the bolt to go forward.

(7) Place the selector lever on Semi and squeeze the trigger.

(8) Pull the charging handle to the rear and release it, allowing the bolt to return to the full forward position.

(9) Place the selector lever on SAFE.

(10) Close the ejection port cover.

b. Disassembling

(1) Remove the sling.

(2) Remove the handrails.

(3) Push the takedown pin as far as it will go and pivot the upper receiver from the lower receiver.

(4) Push the receiver pivot pin.

(5) Separate the upper and lower receivers.

(6) Pull back the charging handle.

(7) Remove the bolt carrier and bolt.

(8) Remove the charging handle.

(9) Remove the carrying handle assembly. Loosen the round nuts on the left side of the carrying handle approximately four turns. Loosen the clamping bar from the left side of the upper receiver and lift off the carrying handle.

(10) Remove the firing pin retaining pin.

(11) Put the bolt assembly in the locked position by pushing in the bolt.

(12) Remove the firing pin by allowing it to drop out of
