M3S10 Reverse Logistics Mini Case
Building a New Supply Chain – Reverse Logistics – Mini Case Study Report

PROBLEM:
The Company is having a difficult time receiving a healthy profit due to the high costs of garbage disposal and the lack of alternative sources of income. Failure to find alternate sources of income will make it difficult for the Company to remain in operation and be profitable.

CAUSE:
The high cost of disposition is cutting deeply into profit margins. Disposal fees are unavoidable if wanting to follow the legal methods of disposal; therefore must be factored into their cost structure. The Company is not utilizing reverse logistics or taking advantage of all opportunities to recover costs by creating a reverse logistics system.

ANALYSIS
Finding an opportunity to recover scrap material is key to the waste business.
Proper sorting and handling is key to maximizing revenue. Unfortunately after recovering and cashing in the scrap metal, the Companies revenue is not $550 as costs of transportation, cost of truck ownership and insurance, as well as labor rates are not considered. This would reduce profit by a set amount, but unfortunately cannot be calculated in this case. It would be safe to say that at

the end of the day, the Company is not making enough money on it’s own in the garbage collection business to sustain itself if they do not find alternate sources of revenue as a constant supplement to the income of the company.

SOLUTION:
It is recommended that the Company pursue its scrap metal waste collection as a no-charge option to their garbage disposal. It is also recommended that the company establish drop off bins for the general public to collect scrap metal.
This would be a no-charge option for the public to dispose of their waste metal.
The Company would wait until the bins are filled, then sort and cash in the scrap waste accordingly. It’s important that scrap is sorted by material type – clean metal vs. painted should be separated, as well as aluminum, copper, tin and the sort. It should be a minimal or no-charge option along with their regular garbage collection services for the construction sites.

It is recommended that the

company pursue this until very sustainable. At this point it is recommended the company expand its facility to a full-service scrap metal yard dealing in highvolumes of material of which there is a tremendous amount of money to be made. The key to the companie’s success is the mindset of constant growth. Do not settle for the status quo but continuously find new opportunities to increase the volume of scrap metal being recycled through their facility.

Although the sales of the company have declined significantly their cost of goods sold has remained high, especially between 1994 and 1995 the company had a decline in sales and an increase in cost of goods sold. This is evidence the company is having problems passing costs to its consumers. The company is not very asset intensive and its decrease in total asset turnover can be due to their decrease in sales, however their rather low total asset turnover which is also decreasing from 2.1 to 1.5 shows their assets are not being used very efficiently. As a result of their sales decrease their Fixed Asset turnover also decreased from 7.0 to 5.4. The decrease in sales and increase in competition also means more shelf time for their inventory which has increased from 103 to 129, which makes Haefren Baum’s price cutting strategy questionable. The company is already experiencing a loss of revenue due to their lower prices; however this is not stimulating the number of different sales because the inventory is sitting in the…

However, they are in a bad financial position, they spend over half of their revenue on the actual sale of their product. Pickett Company needs to find a way to drive down their cost when they sale their product. They have very strong sales and they only are paying ten percent of their revenue to salaries for their employees, which is relatively low. Nevertheless, their cost of goods sold is horrible. This could be caused by a variety of things, for instance, this company might be a manufacturing company were transporting their inventory is their highest cost or the company may spend more money on higher quality raw materials. Bottom line Pickett Company needs to really look at their books and try to figure out a cheaper way to sale their…

There are many things that effect your sources of income and without money your business will quickly fall to nothing. For the Forzani Sports Group ltd. one of the major issues they faced had to do with their lack of diversity in the products they carried and keeping up with ever-changing trends. With the companies best year in business being 2003 having a net-worth of 6.75 billion Canadian dollars, sales were good and expectations were high, but during that year a trend changed drastically, starting a series of downhill events from there. (Forzani executives were caught off guard when that trend began to emerge in 2003) The executives within Forzani Group ltd. failed to spot this shift in trends and ultimately lost out on a chance to expand and diversify their company. If more planning was put into the quickly changing trends this could have been avoided. This isn’t the only issue with diversity that Forzani faces. Forzani stores carry too much product that differs from each other, thus creating too many competitors. (While struggling with product mix, Forzani has also been facing stiff competition on several fronts.) If Forzani was to focus more of their attention towards just one department and expand on that, they might find more success due to the decrease in competition. With such a vast selection of items and a large amount of competition for every one of those items, Forzani was forced to lower their prices dramatically and take a pause in the ambitions of doubling their profit in 5 years. This resulted in the company going through with some pretty questionable marketing tactics such as, increasing the original prices on product so that sale prices looked much better than usual. (The result is that Forzani has been forced to compete on price, which has damaged its earnings - and its reputation.). All of these issues…

Participating in recycling can be more fun than it may actually seem. Imagine turning a few simple metallic bottle caps into stylish earrings. Or creating an vintage looking side table out of scrap or left over wood. Opening DIY recycling centers would greatly improve the way people say items they would call trash. The landfills would be a lot less full, an we would have a lot of new recycled items.…

In the first half of the paragraph, the authors used shocking statistics data and couple success examples from well-known companies proved to the audience how reverse logistics is important to a company. However, quality issue is a shortcoming for all of those solutions. There are many reasons for a product to be…
