Lynn English High School Case Study
The Lynn English High School is a coed, public high school in Lynn, Massachusetts. There are about 1700 pupils enrolled at LEHS, and the student-to-teacher ratio is 17:1. The gender divide is 51 percent female and 49 percent male. The results of state assessments show 82 percent of pupils are proficient in English and 65 percent are proficient in Mathematics. The graduation rate is 83 percent and College Readiness Index is 13.0. LEHS is part of the Lynn School District.

LEHS uses a Common Core curriculum that is in compliance with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Required courses are in English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Foreign Language, Science, Social Studies, Health, and Electives. Elective choices are diverse and include subjects like Microeconomics, Stage Craft, Street Law, and Chorus among others. For those who qualify, the Cisco Academy, Advanced Placement, and Honors classes are available.

Extracurricular activities help round out a student's scholastic life and are encouraged at LEHS as a way to build leadership and teamwork skills. An abundance of opportunities to participate in clubs and organizations exist for LEHS pupils. Among these are the Anime Club, Book Club, Computer Club, National Honor Society, and Student Council. Lynn is known for the Lynn Heritage State Park. The park is part of Boston's Metropolitan Parks System and has exhibits that pay tribute to Lynn's industrial beginnings in shoemaking, and the founder of General Electric, Elihu Thomson. The Diamond Historic District features historic homes that are part of the National Registry of Historic Places. Some of the homes date back to early in the Nation's history with one home circa 1630.
