How often do you lie? Why do you lie? In the article “Honestly Tell the Truth” by Barbara Ballinger talks about how it is sometimes good to lie sometimes bad to lie. And in the article “Teens Do their Share of Lying “ by Loretta Ragsdell says that to cover up a lie you lie again. Lying is sometimes acceptable when you are in a certain situation.…
Lies are told every day by you, me, and even your close loved ones. Everyone lies at some point in their lives. The simple true is we all lie. While reading the “Ways We Lie” by Ericsson’s it was very clear that lies are being told more than the truth. She explains many different types of lies being told from the smallest of lies to protect the emotional state of others, to the extreme lies being told and merely ignoring the plain facts of lies that cause real pain.…
After revisiting Ericsson's interpretation of the ways we lie, I stumbled upon a quote were she stated “It is an act of subtle arrogance for anyone to decide what is best for anyone else”. She was inferring that an individual can not imply that their suggestion is the best option for anyone else. Clearly, that statement is true for numerous reasons. An individual can not state a suggestion towards someone saying it is best for them. While in reality, it's just a faulty lie. People would rather give inaccuracy information instead of telling the honest truth. For example,my neighbor ask for cooking advice and I shelter he or she with lies such as”Your cooking is nice and tasteful”. When in reality I could just give he or she the advice they need to improve their cooking. With that said, white lies (as Ericsson refers to) are genuinely feeling holders.…
In "The Ways We Lie" by Stephanie Ericsson, Ericsson talks about how lies exist in aspects of our life every single day. She describes the different ways that humans lie and justifies why people doing so. These lies discussed in this article include the white lies, facade lies, lies of omission and lies that focus around stereotypes. White lie is a common way that people lie to others, because the lie would be better than the truth. Sometimes, the truth will cause more damage or dangerous than a simple harmless…
“No, you look great in that color”, “I don’t think you need to diet”, or “I’ve never binge watched Netflix” are all example of common lies we tell. As Stephanie Erecsson, the author of “The Ways We Lie” essay, implies that white lies are necessities for living. Though, when lies are incorporated into important affairs, lots of trouble can be aroused. Lying can become a cultural cancer when provided in any political or governmental situation, however, in an individual’s personal life, lying is necessary.…
Lying is a part of everyday life for many people. Everyone has lied in his or her lives before and sometimes it hurts people, however, sometimes it doesn’t. There are many different reasons why people lie. There are also different types of lies. People tell small “white lies” maybe to stop embarrassment or to not hurt someone’s feelings. However, it is much worse when people tell lies because they’re hiding something or they don’t want their parents to know. On the other side, some people tell lies pathologically. People that lie often might have a mental health disorder. Common disorders associated…
Lies are told around the world multiple times during the day. Everyone sitting in this room has probably once today, said a lie. Sometimes lying is understandable for someone’s protection but sometimes the truth is essential to the person. There are multiple things people say in a day that are seen as lies such as “That outfit looks really good on you!,” “It wasn’t me!” and “I’ll be with you in a few minutes.” Honestly is not always the best policy because in the end it does not make everything better. People tell little lies so that they protect someone they care about and not hurt the feelings of another person. Honesty not always being the best policy is showed in The Scarlet Letter, “Tell All The Truth” poem, the “He Lies” video,…
The debate over the acceptability of lying is a complicated one. Some feel that it is morally wrong and only ever worsens a situation. Others feel that it is acceptable in cases where feelings could be hurt, or if a person’s self-esteem may be lowered. However, there are instances in which lying happens simply to avoid the consequences of a person’s actions, and most would agree that it is morally wrong. Instead of going back and forth between “lying is wrong” and “lying is okay sometimes,” a better use of our time would be learning to improve our honesty with ourselves and with the people around…
In America, one thing everybody has in common is lying; it is a natural humanistic behavior. Author Stephanie Ericsson describes some of the average every day lies in her essay “The Ways We Lie”. She describes the white lie as the liar assuming that the truth will cause more damage than the simple, harmless untruth; and an out-and-out lie she describes as the bald-faced lie. A lot of people lie without realizing it. Through personal experience, white lies and out-and-out lies have come across my path a lot in my lifetime.…
First off let me start of by saying that we lie. We all do. We exaggerate, we leave out things, we avoid confrontation, we try to be inconsideration of other people feelings, we conveniently forget some aspects of the truth and even keep secrets. Like most people, I find myself in situations of small falsehoods and still think of my self of an honest person. Sure I lie, but it’s not really bothering anyone or anything.…
Today society consists of good, yet dishonest company. Deceit is more common than uncommon and research has shown that on a daily basis, lies are consistent in every individual’s life. According to a study done by U.S. News & World Report, for every 10 minutes of mundane conversation, one person will tell two to three lies. However, although lying is an evil action that is regarded by many as immoral or betrayal, research has found that a little lying can actually be good for you (Boser).…
People lie all the time. However, when people do lie, they usually regret it. Others may believe that lying is required in life; they are not considering the consequences that come behind it. Lying is never acceptable because it avoids stress and keeps trust with others.…
It is curious to think that any one person could be telling a lie without knowing that they are. In the essay “The Ways We Lie” by Stephanie Ericsson, she explores the thought of how lies are incorporated into everyday life. According to this essay, “We lie. We all do. We exaggerate, we minimize, we avoid confrontation, we spare people’s feelings, we conveniently forget, we keep secrets, we justify lying to the big-guy institutions”. How do we know what the truth is, when we are told what we want to hear? Ericsson writes about ten different “lies,” all of which are commonly used. Ericsson speaks about different lies to justify peoples’ actions and thought, even though some of the lies are oversimplified and basic fundamentals are left out.…
A little white lie can’t hurt anyone can it? White lies are all about the liar choosing what is best to be lied about. I’m sure as a human you yourself have told many of them maybe even without realizing it, I know I have. A white lie I know that I’ve told is telling one of my friends that I liked their new haircut when in reality I hated it. I told them I liked it because I could tell they really liked it and I wouldn’t want to hurt their feelings. Personally I didn’t see anything wrong in saying that because either way there was nothing they could do about…
People may lie a couple times, but that doesn’t make them are liar. Your lying depends on the situation that you encounter. Some people think that lying is the worst thing; and on the contrast other people think that sometimes it would be necessary to lie. Lying can be acceptable on the situation, if there good intention behind it .For instance, if you think that I am giving my friend a moral to make him happy, then that kind of lying would be appropriate and acceptable. Wouldn’t be embarrassed for you if your teachers know that you are liar and if they don’t even trust you? When people are younger, they lie to their family and their friends. Lying would make them a bad person; if their lying is inappropriate and continues. So as I said before lying would depend on the situation that makes to you lie.…
