Detoxification can be a very brutal way for the user to come off of heroin if using the “cold turkey” method. The medical community has found that if under a physician’s care the user can be given methadone to replace the heroin and gradually reduce the dose over time. Methadone maintenance is a supervised dispersal program that lasts over a long period of time. This type of treatment is helpful for those who stick with the program however; methadone is often times easily found on the streets. Methadone will block the yearning for heroin but is not as affective in blocking out the simple cravings for the drug. Alternative maintenance programs like LAAM are available in a three times a week dosage system and buprenorphine can be prescribed by a physician which does not require to be dispensed at a clinic (Levinthal,…

This writer interviewed and researched the Aegis Medical Systems located at 103 Modesto Avenue in Modesto, California; however there are many Aegis Medical Systems treatment centers throughout California. All Aegis Medical System treatment centers follow the same practicum. These centers offer outpatient treatment with three different treatment options. The three treatment options differ in the length in which the person receives drug-replacement therapy. These treatment options include “a short-term detox program, lasting 21 days; a long-term detox program, lasting up to 180 days; as well as a maintenance program” (Aegis Medical Systems, INC., 2012). Each of these treatments consists of an induction period and a tapering period with the replacement drug methadone. The client is slowly given methadone, which is called the induction period. The dosage of methadone increases until the symptoms of addiction and withdrawal no longer hinder the client’s efforts towards fighting their addiction. This writer was told that this drug-replacement therapy does not stop all the symptoms, just lessens the symptoms from being so overwhelming that the client can not focus (personal communication, September 5, 2012).…

coping with the situation which motivated him/her to use drugs. The drawbacks to a medical program include: the cost of the hospital stay, the medical affect on the person, and the brevity of the in hospital program. There is also no standardized time table associated with an affective program, but there are limitations on what most health insurance companies will cover for in-patient care stays where the admittance is voluntary. Where the program is court ordered the whole cost of the program is often borne by the person and his/her family. Thus even though the program if allowed the proper length of time can be affective, the cost may prohibit the person from remaining there long enough to see the full benefit of the care. Few criminal justice programs see the cost benefit of financial assistance for the addicted person…

Some go to rehab to get help, go to prison, or have a fatal overdose. It is not often that you see an old junkie. Even if a person seeks help there is no guarantee they will remain sober. Addiction is a disease that will last a lifetime and it is an everyday struggle. Many relapse after getting out of rehab. A prime example is Oscar-winning actor, Philip Hoffman who went to rehab in May of 2013. “The sad news about Philip Seymour Hoffman broke on a sunny Sunday in February. The Oscar-winning actor, 46, had been found dead from a drug overdose in a New York City apartment, a needle still hanging from his arm. More than 50 packets of heroin were scattered through the apartment.” (Friedman) Various rehab centers use opioids to treat other opioid addictions. The user is trading one addiction for another. The is called harm reduction. The problem with this is “critics say the harm-reduction approach can amount to simply helping drug addicts get drugs.” (Katel) When using opioids such as methadone or buprenorphine to treat an addiction, many become addicted to this opioid and use illicitly. “There also has been a dramatic increase in deaths from methadone — in the wafer form prescribed as a pain medication, not the liquid form used as maintenance for former heroin addicts, says Hazelden's Seppala. “The pill is a…
