Low Technology Visual Strategies Paper
High technology and low technology visual strategies are used in classrooms to assist students with disabilities. These technologies can assist students with autism or a child with a severe disability during instruction, transition, communication and behavior. Low technologies are “visual support strategies which do not involve any type of electronic or battery operated device (High Tech Strategy).” Three examples of low technology strategies that students with autism or a child with a severe disability can use in a classroom are laminated schedules, dry erase boards, and communication boards. According High Tech Strategy, high technologies are “complex technological support strategies” such as iPads, augmentative communication devises and video cameras. Each visual strategy should be geared towards the individual needs of the student.

For this assignment, I’ve select a low technology visual prompting strategy for instruction called a communication board. A communication board displays pictures, symbols and/or words. My targeted audience are students with autism between the ages of 3-7. For each subject, the students will have a communication board. This communication board is a very valuable and frequently used strategy in classrooms today. Each communication

The teacher would prompt the student using verbal cues or hand over hand guidance to express his or her thoughts. Over time, the teacher will fade the prompts reaching the overall goal of independence.

The pros and cons of a communication board

Pros
- Does not require batteries
- Portable
- Does not interfere with other electronic equipment
- Not an airport issue
- Easy to use
- Very inexpensive
- Water proof if laminated
Cons
- If it has removable pictures- you could lose one
- People are not sure what you pointed
