Low-Stakes Response Essay on Gender and Sexuality
Prompt: What is beautiful? What does the word mean to you? How is your interpretation different from the advertisers’ ideal of beauty? The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines beauty as, “the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit.” After watching the many different video clips and also looking at this dictionary definition, I would have to say I agree closer more with the dictionary definition. Looking back on the different video clips, I think the one that stood out most to me was the film clip of the movie Summer Magic. After the clip was over, I caught myself being very unpleased with the message. I couldn’t believe that this movie was trying to tell girls that if

. I was happy that they were trying to say it was what’s on the inside that counts, but then very disappointed when they said you have to change this to be what it should be and not what it is. It isn’t fair to yourself or the guy if either person isn’t being really who they are because you can’t hold a fake personality forever and will end up hurting each other at some point. I can relate to this clip in some ways because as a younger child, I used to be very tomboyish. My family would always try to dress me up in nice clothes, when all I really wanted was just to be in shorts and a t-shirt. It didn’t bother me that I wasn’t getting a boyfriend, but I was getting guy friends. We would do a lot of things together, and although many of them were things you wouldn’t see a girl doing, it was a lot of fun. In many ways I am still more thankful for the guy friends I became close with because we are still very close to this day. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” This famous quote simply expresses the universal concept of beauty has no intrinsic or definite meaning. From this, one can derive that beauty can be nothing more than the subjective perception of human individuals-it is all based on ones predilection and proclivity. However, it is not just to say that anything can be considered as beautiful, thus contradiction does not exist in perceptions of beauty. As one can see, there are certain guidelines to beauty. Whether it is the inner or outer beauty of a human being, the concept of beauty that society imposes is all shaped from general consensus. Then perhaps “Beauty is not one’s own, but a reflection of one’s culture”. Even though nothing can be defined as absolute beauty, due to the limitation ones cultural backgrounds created from the subjective nature of perception, Human beings in the end will still unite their perception of beauty to a universal degree of understanding.…

This paper seeks to draw attention at the meaning of gender analysis and its importance in development and research. However, one needs to first understand what is meant by gender and what it entails. According to FAO, (1997) gender can be defined as ‘the relations between men and women, both perceptual and material, it is not determined biologically, as a result of sexual characteristics of either women or men but constructed socially. It is also a central organizing principle of societies and often governs the processes of production, reproduction, consumption and distribution.’ Gender is about the roles that are created by the society for male and females, their responsibilities and needs. The definition of gender analysis will act as a guideline to discuss and identify the role of gender analysis in development and research. To also understand that the term gender does not only refer and promote women but that men are heavily involved in the description and definition of the term…

While these definitions bear accuracy, they don’t quite fit in with the psychological question of perceptions of beauty, for other complex elements are involved-biological, environmental, non-physical that are necessary to include in order to analyse beauty. Perhaps defining it can be best understood in terms of the common adage ‘Beauty is in the Eye of Beholder’. Although this appears cliché on the surface, the phrase correlates the nature and nurture elements that complete the meaning of beauty.…

The latter is the reason that most people would sacrifice many things in a heartbeat in order to become what society believes is beautiful. Beauty, like everything, is a double-edged sword. It could either help someone live an easier life or it could make one’s life miserable.…

Regardless, people may argue that the meaning of beauty is ingrained in us biologically. What we find “naturally attractive” helps us define who an ideal mate would be. But now that the survival of our race doesn’t depend on our reproduction, we can redefine the definition of beauty to suit our psychological needs. People have ruined their health and taken unnecessary risks, since they’re willing to do whatever it takes to be “beautiful.”…
