There are many factors that contribute to obesity in America today. Pop-culture, genetics, health issues and medications as well as self-esteem, cost of healthy foods today and the lack of affordable gym facilities especially for low-income families who seem to be the main focus point on this problem. Low-income families need more help with this fight on obesity. When most people see an over-weight person, especially a child, they tend to blame it on the parents. Although in some cases this may be true, it is not always the case. Many families have very busy lives and no time for sit-down healthy meals with our children. We tend to stop by fast food places to grab meals for our families. TV’s, video games and computers entertain our children after dinner instead of going out in the evening for a walk, playing hide-and-seek, or just running around playing such games as tag like we use to do when I

Although children in low-income families tend to play outside running around more, the cost of healthy foods are out of our reach. I am a single parent of an over-weight child and fall in the low-income bracket of society. Living on less than a thousand dollars a month, the cost of healthy fruits and vegetables makes it hard to provide healthy foods for my child. For example, out of 200 dollars a month for food, 85 dollars is spent on fruits and vegetables, 85 dollars on meats such as chicken, which we eat a lot of, pork, fish and tuna, forget beef, can’t afford it, and the rest is spent on eggs, milk, rice and noodles, which can be bought in bulk helping to allow the food to last the month as well as fill us up. Forget fast foods, my daughter considers herself lucky to get one medium pizza from Pizza Hut every other month, we can’t afford it, so fast food is not our

Biology, behavior, and the environment are all factors that contribute to obesity. The obesity epidemic is being driven by environmental factors such as high energy/high fat foods, fast food consumption, and the advertising of “super-sized” portions. With today’s stressful lifestyles it is harder to maintain a healthier diet and exercise program for most people. Combating the obesity epidemic involves environmental and social policy changes in portion size, availability of healthful foods, and the promotion of physical activity.…

Obesity can begin at a very young age. Many children in our society are overweight, setting themselves up for serious health problems later in life. Type 2 diabetes, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart problems are just some of the risks. They get teased, criticized, and judged. In many cases, the problem is not the child’s fault. Being overweight may run in that child’s family, or their parents do not encourage them to be active and get enough exercise. Many children spend too much time indoors wasting away in front of the TV, playing video games, or spending time on the computer, and consuming high fat snacks, soft drinks and candy at the same time. The CDC performed a study in 1994 that was described in the book Fat Land; it showed that children who watched over four hours of…

Obesity has become an epidemic all over the world, but mainly throughout The United States. I believe that some of the factors that have influence the spread of the obesity epidemic are fast food consumption, the lack of physical activity in adults and children, as well as the economic status of the families of the nation. The consumption of fast food is at an all-time high, because people are so tired from working long hours every day, so when they leave work or school fast food is obviously the most logical thing for them to grab to eat. Physical activity is something that is an all-time low for adults and children. Many adults do not engage in physical activity because majority of them do not have the time, and most children do not engage in enough or any physical activity at all either because they do not want to or because they are not encouraged to do so. The financial state of the state of families has a lot to do with the rise of obesity as well, because when families do not have enough money to purchase healthy food they tend to feast on cheap, fast food. I know thanks…

Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal discomforts are some of the many serious health effects that should be the nightmare we all avoid. So why it is that in today’s society we are faced with the alarming fact of half of our population being obese, which are the causative agents to these malicious health problems? It seems as if this is an ongoing problem that may never cease to exist. Why? If the quandary of obesity isn’t realized and address it would not be acknowledged as a problem, therefore it would not be corrected. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, child obesity is defined as a Body Mass Index (BMI) at or above the 95 percentile to children of the same sex and age. Obesity is an excess proportion of total body fat. A child is considered obese when his or her weight is 20% or more above normal weight. The most common measure of obesity is the body mass index or BMI. Obesity is rapidly becoming a world wide epidemic, and is starting with our children. Stanford (2001) proposes that the escalation of obesity could be the greatest health threat the world will face in the 21st century. Stanford is highlighting that childhood obesity is a growing health dilemma with a deadly prospect, but who are to blame? In this world today the roles of parents are becoming more demanding than ever before. Our basic knowledge of a parent is one that guides and teaches how to live and survive in this complex world. They are the ones that influence and set out lessons to learn and morals to live by, they are the ones to protect you from harm and detour you from their previous mistakes. Becoming a parent one takes on endless responsibilities and countless blames. However, a parent is only human and can only take full responsibility for certain decisions and behaviors made by…

It has become impossible for low-income families to provide healthy meals for their families. Government, Farm policies and the food industry itself are main reasons as to why the cost of healthy foods has become harder for American families, especially low-income families, to provide the healthy foods needed to fight the obesity epidemic. With low- income families being the main focus point on the problem of obesity in the eyes of society, because many believe that they waste there assistants on junk foods, which is far from fact, the cost of healthy foods has become far too expensive for many Americans to purchase especially low-income families. The fact is low-income families are in need of more and better help in the fight against obesity.…

The article “Poverty and Obesity: Breaking the Link” by Susan Blumenthal, M.D. and Jean Guo, shines the light on how so many children are obese in the United State and how poverty contributes to the rise of it. Families that live in poverty, are less likely to have access to fresh and healthy food compared to wealthy families. Many different programs have started to help stop and reverse childhood obesity. Michelle Obama started programs in the school to help the kids “get up and move” and also provide healthier meals for the kids. There are many things as a nation that can be done to help reduce the risk of diabetes and other health issues, by decreasing the obesity rates.…

In 1835, Adolphe Quetelet defined the body measurements of the average person based on height and weight. “For an adult to be considered at a healthy weight, their body mass index must be between 18.5 and 24.9. An adult with a body mass index between 25 and 29 are considered overweight, and anyone above 30 is considered obese.” (HBO Documentary Films) Obesity has become a major health issue in many countries around the world. Doubling since the 1980’s, obesity now affects more than 1.4 billion adults and 40 million children worldwide. The United States alone has approximately 70 percent of its adult population with obesity. The main causes are not medical conditions but poor food choices, lack of exercise, and lack of awareness.…

First of all, family support is crucial in reducing the number of obese children by watching over their children's diet and making sure they live a healthy life. Furthermore, they also need to pay more attention to what their children eat at school and encourage them to visit sport clubs or do more outdoor activities.
