Love is not only important in literature, but also important in life. Love is shown through many different ways such as, parental love, friendship love and romantic love. “Romeo and Juliet” a play by William Shakespeare shows us all types of love.
The most well known love in “Romeo and Juliet” is romantic love. Romeo who was a Montague fall loves with Juliet, a Capulet. However, Capulets and Monagues are forsworn enemies. Despite, their family feud the two lovers tried their hardest to make this love affair work. When Romeo first laid eyes on Juliet, he said “But soft! What light through yoder window? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun!” This quote shows that Romeo has already fall head over heals for Juliet. When Romeo said, “It is the east, and Juliet is the sun!” He is comparing Juliet to the sun. The sun is a tradition symbol for power and a new start. Also the sun rise from the east every morning. Juliet is Romeo’s new start, to get away from his old requited love, Rosaline. Juliet’s power of beauty enchants Romeo, similar to the sun’s enchanting power.
Another important type important love in “Romeo and Juliet” is parental love. A good example of parental love in the play is Juliet and the Nurse. Through, the Nurse is not Juliet’s biological parent there is a strong sense of parental love there. Since the Nurse has practically brought Juliet up. When Juliet and Romeo decide to get married, Juliet sends the Nurse to Romeo to confirm the time and place where they are going to be wed. The Nurse is the on to warn Romeo “for the gentle woman is young. An therefore, of you should deal double with her, turley it were any gentle woman and a very weak dealing” This quote shows that the Nurse is warning Romeo that, if he pretends to love Juliet and have sex with her. Then dump her, he is a fool and a coward. The Nurse cares about Juliet a lot, she loves her as her daughter.
Lastly, “Romeo and Juliet” teaches that friendship love is just as important as romantic love and parental love. A good example of friendship love is Romeo and Mercutio. Romeo and Mercutio has a strong friendship. Mercutio and Romeo can support each other very well, but they can also have fun joke around with each other. When Romeo was having girl problems, Mercuito gives him advice “if love be rough with you, be rough with love” This quote shows us that Mercutio cares about Romeo a lot. He tries to support Romeo through his darkest time.
