Love in Action Engaging the culture of the community is participating in the shaping of the world through affecting people in some way. Engaging with the people in a community can come through many avenues, including service opportunities, jobs, or even just living daily life with an awareness of what is going on and an openness to get involved. Although it can seem small and insignificant on the global scale, putting time into serving those in a community has a large impact and can change the direction of people’s lives. Service opportunities are ideal for Christians to show the love of Christ to those around them, and they allow the person serving to gain a new perspective on life and the needs in the community. As Christian students at Southeastern University, it is imperative that we engage and pour into our community the love and encouragement of Christ that we are being shown everyday on campus so we can not only make an impact, but learn and grow as we serve. To get involved with the community this semester, I joined a group of Southeastern students that have been going to Dakota Park apartments for the past year and a half to do kids outreach on Saturdays. It was exciting to see how, as soon as the cars pulled up, the kids swarmed to the field in the middle of the apartments and were ready to play with anyone, even though they had never met many of us before. I am not an initially outgoing person, so it took me a while to gather my thoughts and decide what to do and where to go since there were kid everywhere. It was not long before a soccer game got started and I joined the mobs of kids running up and down the field. Once involved in an activity, it was not difficult to begin talking with the kids and observing how they reacted to us and each other. I noticed that many of the kids were related and they treated the SEU students as an extension of their family. It has been incredible to see the way the kids soak up love and attention that they may not

One organization that I’m involved at Goucher College is the Futuro Latino Learning center (FLLC). This program provides opportunities specifically to the Latino community of Baltimore County. The students of Goucher College teach classes and there is ESL and basic computer training. Students are not only helping the Latino community but they get the opportunity to speak Spanish and improve their language skills. In my first year of college I helped with teaching a class; I was the assistant tutor. Now this year I am helping out with the children program playtime and cultural program. While the adults are taking their classes they drop off their children. This program provides a safe space and for children to learn about their culture and speak…

A particular activity that stood out to me the most was the burrito project. Living pretty close to downtown LA I frequent visits there. I’ve witnessed homeless people asking for help and it hurt knowing that I could not do anything to help at the time. Until one day I came across the Burrito Project. I brought upon an idea to the club that we should help out the homeless. During the wintertime we all met at a church in Pasadena to prep the materials. At the church we make the burritos, it was considered the main meal for them. After making the burritos…

Paul’s suggested method for reaching people with the gospel was remarkably different. He tried to understand the customs and practices of those he hoped to influence, becoming like the people he wanted to reach. “I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some” (1 Cor. 9:22). Paul went to them-the essence of the idea of mission-but today the multicultural climate has brought the ethnic and cultural mix to us. Differing forms of worship, ritual practices, rites of passage and even religious attire are no longer the stories of foreign lands and mission fields; they are part of the multicultural community. To apply Paul’s principle today, we must learn as much as possible about the culture of our neighbors in order to live alongside them and present the gospel. Debate rages today about how to do this without falling into relativism on the one hand or exclusivism on the other. The values, the worldview and the religious belief of my neighbor may include ways to salvation outside of Christ.…

Jonathan Edwards is one of the most dominant figures in 18th century American religion, a fiery revivalist preacher and a pioneer in the Reformed Church, which would eventually be today's United Church of Christ. The fifth child of Rev. Timothy and Esther Edwards, Jonathan was the only boy in their family of 11 children. He was born in 1703 in East Windsor, Connecticut. Edwards' smartness was noticeable from an early age. He went to Yale before he was 13 years old and graduated as the valedictorian. Three years later he received his master's degree. At the age of 23, Jonathan Edwards succeeded his grandfather, Solomon Stoddard, as pastor of the church in Northampton, Massachusetts. It was the richest and most influential church in the colony, outside of Boston. Jonathan Edwards married Sarah Pierpoint in 1727. They had three sons and eight daughters. Edwards was a key figure in the Great Awakening, a period of religious passion in the middle of the 18th century. Not only did this movement bring people to the Christian faith, but it also influenced the fathers of the Constitution, who guaranteed freedom of religion in the United States.…

Having the opportunity to make new, diverse friends around the community impacted me as a person. The people I met not only included the people I served, but also included the people I worked alongside of me in the food pantry. Since I volunteered at the same day and time every week, I was able to become familiar with many new people. In fact, many of these people were even able to connect to my life. One day I had a conversation with a man I volunteered with numerous times whose name was Steve.…

I was babysitting with three other high schoolers and I was told that there are normally more kids that attend but the night that I was helping there was only four kids. There was a dinner before and they had spaghetti and cookies along with milk or juice. It smelt really good but I had practice before so I was not able to attend the dinner. I did end up getting a cookie and that was really good. After the dinner when the meeting started we were able to go into a teachers room and play with the toys or stay in the gym and shoot hoops or run around. The little girls decided they wanted to go into the room and I was more than happy to go in there and play games. Girls are normally more my thing. Nathan came with and helped, we played hangman on the board and “house” that didn't last very long. One of the girls wanted to play “teacher” so she gave me and Nathan a spelling test and by that time it was time to go. I had a lot of fun playing with the little girls. I took one-two hours out of my night to help the parents of the kids so they could focus on the meeting and not worry about what their kids were doing in another room. When I was little my mom was in PTO and I still remember when high schoolers came to help and I hope they remember when they are my age. Knowing that I was making a difference made me want to realize the importance of helping the…

I was privileged enough to be a part of a program in my high school that encouraged participating in volunteer work for both the community and school. For the past 3 years of my high school career, I was able to volunteer at neighborhood events hosted by a recreational center to a larger scale event like the Little Feet Meet hosted by Old Dominion University, where a Special Olympics is organized for elementary students across Norfolk who have mental and physical disabilities. By volunteering to these type of events, I realized that one of the fundamental aspects of being a good citizen is helping provide an environment in which everyone can feel free and…

It was a crisp, Autumn Saturday evening at my grandparents farm, my entire extended family was packed around a bonfire roasting marshmallows and eating s 'mores. My mother was talking with her brother and sisters, my uncle and aunts, about the A+ Program, my mother mentioned that I had no idea on how I was going to get so many community service hours. My aunt said I could come help tutor her 5th grade class any days that I would like. That was a giant relief to hear because this situation had really been bothering me lately. I was also glad I wouldn 't have to waste 50 hours of my life picking up trash on the side of the highway. Instead, I will be helping kids with their education and growing relationships with them as well. I really enjoy working with children so this was a great opportunity.…

I volunteered at Immaculate Conception school for the program called Project T.H.I.N.K. Immaculate Conception school is a charter school located in the middle of Downtown Los Angeles. The school teaches children from kindergarten through eighth grade. I have volunteered at so many different organizations that included working with food, working with animals, and even with books at the library. I have never volunteered with kids before that included growing relationships with them. I chose this site because professionally I want to be a Pediatric Nurse. I also felt that this is a great opportunity to finally gain experience with kids. I also chose this site because it is only 10 minutes away from the Doheny campus. I only need to take the bus by the school and I get dropped off right by the school. This volunteer…
