Love And Shrew In Hortensio's '
Hortensio in the beginning of the play is one of the suitors to Bianca but then when he sees Bianca show her affections towards her teacher Cambio (Lucentio in disguise) he gives up on her and goes off to marry a wealthy widow instead. Hortensio is also a friend of Petruchio's and is the character who actually introduces Petruchio to Katherina. Hortensio and Petruchio are very similar, they both want to marry someone wealthy (they are gold-diggers), and their wives both are disobedient and shrew like towards their husbands. Both try to tame their wives and while Petruchio ends up successfully taming Katherina, Hortensio ends up with a dominating wife.
Hortensio's search for a wealthy wife is understandable, it's driven by his lust of the power

At the end of the story she was much different than at the beginning. She was submissive, nice, and even talked down other wives for not being good wives. What happened was she had got married to Petruchio. Who married her for the high downey placed on her. This was set up by a suitor of Bianca, Lucentio, who poses as a tutor, but has little else to do with her change. She did not immediately fall for Petruchio, she fought him and even had to be tricked to go through with the marriage. Slowly Petruchio taught her how to act, through withholding food and clothing and ill treatment, and even some clever mind games she figured it out.…

Kat from the movie is represented as anti-social, heinous, and very blunt. Katharina from the play is violent and usually ends up screaming and yelling at people. They both have a bad reputation with people of their communities. Next, the tamer of the “shrew” in the play is Petruccio, while the tamer in the movie is named Patrick or Pat, for short. Katherine and Katarina both have a sister named Bianca, who is well known as outgoing and popular. The dad’s of the “shrews” from the movie and the play are also very much alike. Walter, the dad from the movie does not allow Bianca to date until her older sister Kat dates. In the play, the dad, Baptista, wants Katharina to marry first before Bianca does, which is a family tradition to them. In the play, Lucentio is the boy who finds Petruccio…

In the Taming of The Shrew the relationships that occur are a little odd. You have the one relationship with Bianca and Lucentio where she is the real definition of a wife. And on the other hand you have Kate and Peruchio were Kate seems to be more of the head person in charge. In Bianca and Lucentio relationship is more of Lucentio taking the leading role in the decision making. Bianca is in clear understanding of her role and what is expected of her. Bianca is one women who I believe that is scared to actually stand up for herself and actually what she believes in. She plays that role as if she is not suppose to be speaking her mind.…

Women are equal to men. Doesn't it balance out? Unfortunately in society, they aren't treated that way. One example of this is in the play 'Taming of the Shrew' as it displays women as the lesser sex, with male lead Petruchio placing a bet on his ability to 'tame' Katherine, a mean bat, but also his future wife.…

Bravery, Independence, and helpfulness are great examples of character traits. In every book, movie, TV show, and play, characters may be faced with overcoming their own traits to complete a certain goal. A few characters share the same traits and many characters are completely opposite. Written in 1590 and 1595 by William Shakespeare, The Taming of the Shrew and Romeo and Juliet both exhibit a wide variety of characters with individual personalities. Katherine and Juliet, the two leading ladies, present a shopping cart full of similarities and differences. One can see that, while only Katherine is independent, both Katherine and Juliet are passionate and dramatic.…

In both versions of the play there is an overlying theme of money and power. In the 1967 version Petruchio is paid by Hortensio to woo Kat, likewise Patrick is paid by Joey to woo Kate. This shows that both the men were only in it to make money. Petruchio even says himself "come to wive it wealthily in Padua; / If wealthily then happily in Padua". In the Elizabethan era it was…

Bianca on the other hand is a snotty sophomore who believes her sister is out to ruin her life. One difference is that Bianca, who defends her sister at the end of the film, while in the play Bianca, refuses to obey her husband in the end. Some of the differences and similarities come from a few different characters, for example, Cameron from “10 Things I hate about you” is like the character Lucentio from “The Taming of the Shrew” Lucentio is very bold in himself, unlike Cameron who is very shy about Bianca. These two characters are also alike, in the fact, they both disguised themselves as some sort of teacher. Lucentio actually disguised himself as a teacher, and Cameron actually learned French so that he would be able to be Bianca’s French tutor. Joey from the movie “10 Things I hate about you”) is more snob than Hortensio (The Taming of the Shrew”) is he thinks that he could get any girl he…

It was not until the 20th century that the topic of poor treatment towards minorities and women began to make recurring appearances in legislation and US Supreme Court decisions. Minority ethnicities and religions, as well as races, began to obtain more rights and experience less discrimination due to progress in legislation. Before the 20th century, most ethnicities, races, and women were viewed as subordinates and accepted that position because they had no opportunity to move up the socioeconomic ladder and lacked the means to fight against the system that disenfranchised them. Unbeknownst to most, several of these explosive topics were addressed in literature over 300 years prior…

Hearing that I had to read The Taming of the Shew, I was not enthusiastic at all. I read the play previously in my eighth grade literature class, years ago, and I have not been a Shakespeare fan since then. Also, if I had the power to ban Shakespeare from any educational curriculum, then I probably would. I believe that Shakespeare belongs in a History class or a class just on Shakespeare, for its dated, old, and not quite fit for many modern English learners like myself.…

A close analysis of the characters can reveal the attitudes and values of the two societies in which the texts, Shakespeare's play, The Taming Of The Shrew, and Junger’s film, 10 Things I Hate About You, were composed. An investigation of the Protagonists in each text, Katherina and Petruchio, and Kat and Patrick allows an insight into the attitudes and values of the societies in which each text was set.…

In "The Taming of the Shrew" by William Shakespeare, and "Ten things I hate about you", directed by Gil Junger, both contexts reflect the society of when each text was composed. When comparing these two texts and observing the themes, it is indisputable that these contexts have shown the similarity and differences of the values during the time, thus, it shows the evolution of society.…
