Love And Faith In Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown
YOUNG GOODMAN BROWN came forth at sunset, into the street of Salem village, but put his head back, after crossing the threshold, to exchange a parting kiss with his young wife. And Faith, as the wife was aptly named, thrust her own pretty head into the street, letting the wind play with the pink ribbons of her cap, while she called to Goodman Brown.

"Dearest heart," whispered she, softly and rather sadly, when her lips were close to his ear, "pr'y thee, put off your journey until sunrise, and sleep in your own bed to-night. A lone woman is troubled with such dreams and such thoughts, that she's afeard of herself, sometimes. Pray, tarry with me this night, dear husband, of all nights in the year!"

"My love and my Faith," replied young Goodman

He arose, at Goodman Brown's approach, and walked onward, side by side with him.

"You are late, Goodman Brown," said he. "The clock of the Old South was striking, as I came through Boston; and that is full fifteen minutes agone."

"Faith kept me back awhile," replied the young man, with a tremor in his voice, caused by the sudden appearance of his companion, though not wholly

ha! ha!" shouted he, again and again; then composing himself, "Well, go on, Goodman Brown, go on; but, pr'y thee, don't kill me with laughing!"

"Well, then, to end the matter at once," said Goodman Brown, considerably nettled, "there is my wife, Faith. It would break her dear little heart; and I'd rather break my own!"

"Nay, if that be the case," answered the other, "e'en go thy ways, Goodman Brown. I would not, for twenty old women like the one hobbling before us, that Faith should come to any harm."

As he spoke, he pointed his staff at a female figure on the path, in whom Goodman Brown recognized a very pious and exemplary dame, who had taught him his catechism in youth, and was still his moral and spiritual adviser, jointly with the minister and Deacon Gookin.

"A marvel, truly, that Goody Cloyse should be so far in the wilderness, at night-fall!" said he. "But, with your leave, friend, I shall take a cut through the woods, until we have left this Christian woman behind. Being a stranger to you, she might ask whom I was consorting with, and whither I was going."

"Be it so," said his fellow-traveller. "Betake you to the woods, and let me keep the

Goodman Brown saw his wife as a spiritual belief as well. He calls out to her with kind words but he also mentions her name as in he is talking to both, “My love and my faith” he is expressing his love to her as he also tells us what she also represents to him. Another way he shows us that she is a duplicate symbol is when he leaves his home to go to the forest…

Young Goodman Brown ask a false question of faith, false in the assertion that the question can have only two answers. Faith is singularly defined as good thus all else, especially doubt, is evil. Therefore, Goodman Brown’s revelation - not all people of faith have pure faith- is profoundly troubling. In effect the rigid construct of his world is shattered. Furthermore Brown, due to his position in society, epitomizes respectability and is naturally married to Faith. His status is essentially his birthright, for his father and grandfather before him were reputable men. To an extent Brown functions as the common American man who cherishes the history of a country and family name bestowed onto him while lamenting obligation. Goodman encounters the conflict of masculinity explicitly, not only does he carry a highly regarded family name, but he also is not privy to innocence and blind faith like his wife. Faith is pink, childlike, and unknowing of darkness or doubt. Faith represents the impossibility of unadulterated belief, for it is remarkably unlikely for a mature adult to be so ignorant of life’s tribulations. However, in Young Goodman Brown unadulterated faith is presented as the only pious option even though doubt is inevitable and pervasive. Doubt and the darkness lingering in the forest have, in fact, reached nearly the whole town. There in the woods “the good shrank not from the wicked”(85). In reality, there is no clear divide between good and evil, thus there is no clear divide between faith and doubt. Such a statement, a refusal of dichotomy,…

The story Young Goodman Brown and Religion shared very similar things we face as humans every day. Whether it’s the lack of faith, fear, or finding yourself in temptation. In fact, the story also displays how Brown believes he was a good Christian, but yet he lacks faith in what he believes is the truth. In my opinion; I do believe that Young Goodman Browns dream was a premonition of something yet to come into his life. We as readers can see that Young Goodman Brown was facing a trail of faith and his walk with the Lord. As a reader the question that comes to mind after reading Young Goodman Brown’s story, Can fear hinder your faith? Yes I do believe that fear can hinder your faith because while Young Goodman Brown left his wife faith behind, so Brown begins to have fear whether or not should he leave.…

Although relatively new, as affirmed by Brown when he asks Faith, "Dost thou doubt me already, and we but three months married?" (Hawthorne) Brown's relationship with both his wife and faith can be seen as strong and stable. Brown tends to mostly deal with small temptations which all of mankind must encounter. His journey into the forest specifically represents to Brown a temporary breaking point in the relationships as seen when he states, "After this one night, I'll cling to her [his wife, Faith] skirts and follow her to heaven". Not Angels: not men, and the resourceful creatures see clearly that we are not really at home in the interpreted world. Perhaps there remains some tree on a slope, that we can see again each day: there remains to us yesterday's street, and the thinned-out loyalty of a habit that liked us, and so stayed, and never departed. Oh, and the night, the night, when the wind full of space wears out our faces – whom would she not stay for, the longed-for, gentle, disappointing one, whom the solitary heart with difficulty stands before.…

Near the end of his message Father Flynn says a profound statement that could sum up the theme: “Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty” (6). Every character displays some of the effects of doubt. Sister James becomes vulnerable after she first allows doubt to enter her mind regarding the words of Sister Aloysius. She becomes vulnerable in her faith in not just others, but herself. The young woman allows the doubt to corrupt her previously established opinions and ideas on her life. Sister Aloysius had become reserved because of her prior experiences with doubt. Although she tried her best to appear confident, she left the play admitting to the vulnerability doubt gave her. It forced her to accept the unknown and work with what felt like the best possible decision. Both women show that at any stage, vulnerability of faith comes with doubt.…

Before Goodman Brown begins his dismal journey into the black abyss, it is apparent in the beginning of the story the suffering Goodman Brown will have when he enters the forest, and if he does, returns. "A lone woman is troubled with such dreams and such thoughts…" In "Young Goodman Brown", Faith, Brown's wife, is symbolic of Brown's faith, which he gradually loses as he doubts more and more the existence of any goodness in man. The physical movement away from Faith, marking his own loss of faith, can be traced through the forest. Brown is conscious of the dangers of the mission but is impelled onward by the thoughts of evil, which overwhelms him until it is too late to turn back to his wife and so to his faith in God.…
