While I have read one book by Jerry Spinelli I’ve never taken the time to learn about the author. I started my search for information by going to his official website and checking out his frequently asked question page. I learn that his writing process changes a lot and that sometimes he is able to write a book in a month and then other times it takes more than a year to publish a new book. Another thing I learn is that he gets his inspiration from his memories and everyday life. The most interesting thing I have learned so far is that he writes because he feels his experiences are not real unless he writes them down.…

In John Updikes excerpt of The First Kiss, Updike uses metaphors and other rhetorical devices to convey the audiences attitude of the opening season baseball game. The audiences clearly have great interest of the environment around them as they optimistically keep their eyes glued to the players. The way that Updike combines sentences along with the sentence structure is also support as Updike shows the audiences point of view towards the game. The use of metaphor, syntax and diction show the attitude of the audiences at the opening season of a baseball event.…
1. The tittle Eat, Pray, Love directly corresponds to the three different sections of this book. The sections refer to the 3 countries Gilbert visited in her yearlong trip to Italy, India, and Indonesia. First, she experienced the mouth-watering food of Rome. Then, she stayed at an Ashram in India to pray and discover who she really was. Finally, She wrapped up her adventure in Bali where she found the love of her life. The title connects thematically because eating, praying and loving are 3 main joys in life and the book is all about Gilbert finding joy. Healing also plays a role the meaning of the title because those who are broken usually turn to food, God, or love and that is exactly what she did. Eat, Pray, Love was a perfect title for this novel…

In this writing assignment I will be giving a detailed interpretation on Robert Nozick’s writing, “Love’s Bond”. First I will give an explanation on Nozick’s account of the nature of love. Secondly, I will explain why Robert Nozick believes that in love there is no desire to trade up to another partner. Lastly, I will also explain why he says that it is incoherent to ask what the value of love is to an individual person.…
Although the concept of niceness is mentioned several times in the text, Carr uses this as justification for the destruction of personal identity as a direct effect of colonialism. Carr recognizes niceness is about being colonized, as native women must be ‘trained’ to conform to societal norms (Hyman, Jan 17/17). When Sophie is asked anything about her life or routine she simply replies, “nice ladies always do” as if the idea of being nice is expected of her (Carr, 56). Even when Sophie is allowed to touch the babies she mutters “nice ladies don’ touch Em’ly” as if she is not allowed because she cannot have one of her own (Carr, 65). The author works to make the character realize the injustice right in front of her and is almost successful.…
“I know what women want. They want to be beautiful.”, a quote from Valentino Garavani, when it comes to the play Beauty by Jane Martin this quite could not fit any better. This play is about a girl and her burning desire to be something she is not, and that is Beautiful. Around, the early to mid-90s is a good guess as to when this story took place. This play shows how at the culture shapes the way a play is written.…
