Lorraine Field: Alas, A Series Of Visual Laments
1.Lorraine Field: Alas, A series of Visual Laments is the striking 21 piece temporary exhibition taking place in Saint Mary's University’s 2 room gallery space. Curated by Robin Metcalfe, this show features the photo prints of Lorraine Field. The prints are framed with a grey wooden trim that compliment the earthy themes prevented in the exhibition. This show is on view from January 14th - March 5th 2017 (SMU Art Gallery Website,Feb 22nd 2017)

2. Alas is the a visual exploration of a widow’s sadness and grieving coupled with the remembrance of a lost loved one and the uprooting realization that we do not live forever. All of the works included in this exhibition are prints of photographs taken by Lorraine Field. These pieces are categorized into self portraits, portraitures of landscapes and interior. Internal Differences 1 And 2 are the only pieces in this exhibition that depict a scenario indoors. Internal Differences 1 features Roger Field’s arm chair; internal Difference 2 features the bed Roger Field and Lorraine Field shared. The works Levelled Years 1-4 is another series of self portraits Fields took through the first year after the death of her husband (2013) to four years later. (2017) Continuing with the landscape theme, Lorraine poses herself laying on her side facing the sea, away from the camera. Lorraine wears all black, referencing back to the representative meaning she has already established in previous works discussed. As the viewer travels through the portraits and subsequently the years post mortem, Lorraine sheds her clothing as she gets closer to the sea. This is a metaphor; the clothing represents her withdrawal from the world and the new experience of being on her own for the first time in a very long time. The clothing represents her discomfort with this new world she now lives in. As the clothing becomes more and more scarce, it's a reflection of how Field is becoming more and more comfortable with herself emotionally. Year after year, Lorraine's pose gets more and more comfortable. From curled into a ball on a table the first year, to comfortably lounging in the fourth. No doubt Lorraine is exploring her general feelings about life and death as each year passes since the death of her husband. “Photography has long been associated with death.” ( Lorraine Field, Alas Artist Statement, 2017). Images can be used to create and represent knowledge of a subject.     In the world of art, the photograph has conventionally been used to establish original subjects that document and reflect cultures as accurately as possible. However, in Philip Gefter’s essay, “Photographic Icons: Fact, Fiction, or Metaphor”, Gefter points out that, “just because a photograph reflects the world with perceptual accuracy doesn’t mean it is proof of what actually transpired. (208)” What Gefter is telling us is that it is that the ordinary reality of the image is not what is important; the metaphoric truth is the significant factor. What makes photojournalism essential is that it helps show us how to view the world in an individualized way. It is, essentially, a public art, and its power and importance is a function of that artistry.     This paper has been far more difficult to research than I thought it would be. Unfortunately, photographers are not always given the full credit they desrve for their work and therefore, it is impossible to find the names of the artists of some of my favorite photographs. Instead, I decided to just look up popular photographers in the fashion industry in hopes of having easier access to information. Despite the fact that I now had the names of some of the most world famous fashion photographers, finding information on them is a whole other story in and of itself. As I am beginning to realize, the saying among the photography department is true- if you are not Annie Leibovitz, you will not be known until you are dead. For example, one of my favorite photographers is Diane Arbus. She had compiled vast amounts of work throughout her career. Unfortunately, all of her works were found in a locker after her suicide and then she was seen as an artist. To summarize what I am saying is that the only famous photographers are dead ones and all the successful ones are barely known. So in order for this research paper to even have the possibility of making it it to four pages, I am going to have to choose the cliché (yet greatly talented) photographer, Annie Leibovitz.…

Photography is exposed throughout the documentary; the role of photography is to portray the opportunity that has been granted to these children for them to express themselves.     Five Day Forecast, by Lorna Simpson depicts a composition of five large black and white photographs cut off at the torso of a woman on each day of the workweek. Simpson illustrates a black woman in a plain ill-fitted shift dress. This woman stands facing the camera, arms crossed, accentuating the strength and the muscular build of her arms only to emphasis in on the looseness of the fabric hanging from her upper body.     The current art show is a solo exhibition by visual artist Kate Georgallis. The show, Standing Close, Seeing Far opened November 17th and runs until December 16th. It is being held at the StFX Art Gallery and can be found on the first floor of Bloomfield Centre located on campus. My first reaction to this show was my immediate response to all the range of colours. This show is very vibrant with many pieces to admire. Kate Georgallis is displaying thirty of her finest works, all of various sizes and mediums, including paint, etching, stain glass and embroidery.
