Lord of the flies quote analysis
1...."Perhaps there aren't any grownups anywhere." The fat boy was startled. The fair haired boy says this in the beginning of the book when he meets up with the very fat boy. The way that the boy reacts to this shows that they are at a young age and still very dependent on their parents and adults for help in life. This dependency will make surviving on the island very difficult.
2. "The fat boy." While appearing just like a descriptive term for the yet to be named boy, I think that this shows a deeper meaning. He is not referred to as the boy, but the fat boy. I think that this shows that the children will treat him unfairly and worse than each other based upon mere outward appearances
3. "I can't swim.. My asthma.... My auntie." Piggy brings up his aunt and his asthma many times throughout the beginning of the book. His attachment to his aunt, who will not be around, and his asthma makes him a prime target not only for bullying from the kids, but a struggle for him to survive on the island. Piggy seems to have many detriments that will bring him down physically, and socially. I think piggy is boned.
4. "We can use this to call a meeting. The others will come when they hear this." Piggy says this when he finds the conch shell with Ralph. This quotes shows that if there is one thing that piggy does have, it's brains. Most people would just pass by a shell without any thought, but not piggy. He thinks to use it as a signal call. The other kids might make fun of him, but they will need piggy around in certain situations that need brains.
5."His face was crumpled, and freckled. Ugly without silliness." The description of this boy, the obvious leader of a group of boys who emerges, goes on to describe how angry he looks. I believe with this brief description we are meeting the antagonist of the story. You'd think that after finding another group of human beings on a stranded island, one would appear happy, but no, not this boy. He appears discontent with the

After both boys find each other, they decide to try and find the others on the island by using a conch shell to lure them to the beach. Ralph blew the shell multiple times until all of the boys were congregated into one area. Piggy, along with being the brains of the island, is also a very complex and misunderstood boy. “Piggy is a much more complex character, than the simplistic interpretations so regularly adduced will allow”. (Reilly. online). This states that Piggy was an extremely complicated character, and is often overlooked by not only characters in the book, such as Jack and Ralph, but also by readers. He is also described as a brainiac by Golding himself, “Piggy, for all his ludicrous body, had brains”. (Golding 71). This emphasizes to the reader that Piggy’s brain is being discounted due to his stature, and this causes readers to discount his intelligence, however, it brings the reader’s attention to them being naive. This last quote also reinforces the concept that his body is causing his smarts to be overlooked “Piggy lacks the looks but has the know-how. The trouble is that he knows but cannot do and is relegated”. (Reilly. Online).…

Piggy was brutally honest and wasn’t afraid to express his thoughts and ideas. Unlike the rest of the group, he was highly intelligent and thought logically through the problems they endured. He gave the idea of making a sundial, which is a clock that represents order and discipline, two characteristics which the group of boys desperately need. The boys are ruthless and disobey the rules. They became careless as time passes by, with no hope of being rescued. Their lack of care is what lead them to be so ruthless many times throughout the novel. Even with the circumstances, Piggy stayed on line and mature. He didn’t act ruthlessly and attempted to talk some sense into the boys about their actions; however the boys reluctant. The group itself…

Piggy’s outer appearance serves as a vessel for the boys to make fun of him. Little do they know that his thoughts and ideas would help better the group and create a better chance of arriving back home. At the beginning of the story, we see Piggy following Ralph everywhere he goes, babbling off ideas and thoughts in his head. After his encounters with Jack and the group members, he begins to tone down his thoughts and ideas soon after realizing they don’t care. Piggy’s death near the end of the book is very symbolic to his cause. When piggy dies, the conch is smashed, signifying all the order and control and civilization in the story. Also, it marks the end of rational thinking and the beginning of savagery. Piggy was the rational, smart, and calm, one of the calmest in the group, but his death marks the end of civilized calm thinking and rationalization, with the…

Throughout the entire endeavor on the island Piggy is seen as an outcast of society. No one wants him around, and no one sees why anyone even needs him around. However, not on person ever realizes the without Piggy the group may not survive long enough to even get rescued. For example, they may all kill each other before an officer arrives to rescue them. Piggy's main objective during this time may be to, in his own way, keep order and sanity. Piggy new that if a person wants to get something done that he needs to be firm and frank about what he or she wants. For instance while Ralph and Piggy were arguing, Piggy says to Ralph "You got to be tough now. Make 'em do what you want "(92). This may have shown Ralph that Piggy may actually know what he is talking about since this method was so affective for Piggy with all of the little ones. Many times Piggy would try to reason with all of the boys including Jack when he would say to them, "Which is better- to be a pack of painted Indians like you are, or to be sensible like Ralph" (180). At this point Piggy new that everyone was turning into savages and he tried everything in his will power to stop them. It may be apparent many times when using his rationalism and intellect that he was trying to stay as civilized as possible. Though he may have poured his heart out to keep order and sanity, he was eventually very unsuccessful.…

After using the island as temporary vacation, soon learned that the island was not just any other island; it was a carnivorous island. By day everything appeared to be ordinary but by night the island turned into an acidic beast devouring the dead fish trapped in the ponds and turning algae into acidic predators. Pi reached a conclusion stating, “I prefered to set off and perish in search of my own kind than to live a lonely half-life of physical comfort and spiritual death on this murderous island” (283). This is similar but vastly different to the physical features and importance of the island in Lord of the Flies. Unlike Pi, the young british boys had no other option but to take their chances of survival on the island rather than making a raft and setting off in search of rescue. The physical makeup of the british boys island was the more typical stereotype of an island containing a dense forest on one side and steep jagged rocks at the base of a hilltop on the other. Instead of opens plains teeming with hundreds of thousands of meerkats, this island overflowed with thick brush where wild pigs flourished. Both the meerkats and the wild pigs served as key source of food for the different characters. What makes these islands similar is the fact that british boys believed within the island too lived a “beast”. At first, the beast was nothing more than a product of the boys' imaginations. The smaller boys were afraid of things they saw at night. Instead of be afraid of nothing, they gave their fear a name, the Great Unknown, and a fantasized about it in their minds. The beast was claimed to have been seen by the twins who described the beast as having “teeth” and “eyes”. This unconfirmed beast creates a huge center of conflict within the group of boys. It puts the boys in an increased state of chaos and…
