Lord Of The Flies Leadership Qualities
To start off with, there are many qualities that make a person have good leadership skills but to me the most important one requires dedication, honesty, the ability to motivate others, and compassion. It is not something you are born with but something that you learn either through others or on your own. For most they are taught from an early age about the most basic survival skills. The ability to know right from wrong and to know that for every decision there are consequences either good or bad. Good leadership means doing what needs to be done in the best possible way with the least amount of bad consequences for all those affected. In the Lord of the Flies Jack was the one with the superior leadership qualities. One …show more content…
I would hope that I would be able to look at the whole situation and show by example that it is possible to have compassion, understanding, dedication and commitment to my fellow companions. The most important reason being to keep everyone safe. I feel by leading someone with fear it is not beneficial to the cause. I agree that there should definitely be some kind of rules in place but not to the extreme that was in Lord of the Flies. On the other hand if I was not a leader it would be hard to choose between Jack and Ralph. Do you choose the person you know has your best interests at heart and who chooses to lead with compassion or do you choose the person who seems more excited by the thought of being in control even though he has the means to feed you? Do you follow someone in fear or because you want to? I cannot make an informed opinion on who I would follow because they both have different qualities where if put all together would be the perfect leader. If it was as simple as age you could arguably say that it would be wiser to follow the oldest because they know more. Seeing as these were all children around the same age there is no way to define who knows more. You could only hope that the decision you make would be the right one in order to survive not as one person but as a group of people doing the best that they know how to do with the situation they are

At the beginning of Lord of the Flies Ralph and Jack are competing for the role of leader. They go about this in very different ways like how Ralph tries to convince them about what needs to get done and how they should be doing things. While on the other hand Jack tries to gain the affections of the group by letting them do whatever they want whenever, and giving the meaty nutrition (69). Ralph has a lot of good leadership qualities like being able to take input from teammates like Piggy, and how he focuses on the immediate problem at hand (42). Jack has good leadership qualities as well like how he is willing to let them have fun, and how he organizes the hunts (51). Thought they both have admirable leadership qualities I believe the better leader of the two is Ralph.…

Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, has Ralph and Jack Merridew as two of the main characters. As they are on the island, they come between the issues of who is chief and who is not. Both characters display some qualities of a leader in different ways. If I were to pick a leader between the two, I would choose Ralph for he is organized, and thinks of everyone not just himself.…

In the lord of the flies Golding explores the theme of dynamic leadership throughout the novel. Ralph is the most dynamic and effective leader in the lord of the flies because he is the primary representative of order, civilization, and productive leadership. While most of the boys initially are concerned with playing, having fun, and avoiding work, Ralph sets about building huts and thinking of ways to be rescued. For this reason Ralph’s power and influence over the others are secure at the beginning of the novel. “Something deep in Ralph spoke for him. “I’m chief. I’ll go. Do not argue.”pg 155. Ralph is not the one agreeing to go look for the beast; it is the chief inside of him. He is a good example of how power can actually make you…

It is difficult to pick the right leader when you are stranded on an island all alone and you are twelve or younger years old. In William Golding’s novel Lord of the Files, the young boys have to make this decision. The leader on this island shouldn’t be just one boy. It would be best for the kids to pick two boys to lead their pack. Piggy and Ralph are perfect examples of kids who should be co-leaders. The boys might not have thought about it, but it should be both of them for multiple reasons. First, these two boys work really well together together. Piggy and Ralph have worked well together since they found the conch in the beginning of the book. Also, the two boys have the same goal. They want to get off the island as soon as they can.…

There are always people who come out with better qualities to be a leader than others. The strongest people however, usually become the greater influences in which the others decide to follow. However, sometimes the strongest person is not the best choice. In William Golding's novel, “Lord of the Flies” Ralph though not the stronger person, shows better leadership qualities than Jack. Ralph displays these useful qualities as a leader by working towards building a manageable life on the island between them. He knows the boys need order so he creates rules, in order so they survive and can get along on the island. On the other hand, Jack does not treat the boys with respect and equality as Ralph does. Ralph understands that the boys have to be given respect and must be treated equally. This makes Ralph a better leader as he is able to see that he is not superior to any of the other boys. Ralph's wisdom and ability to look to the future also make him a superior leader. Ralph’s main focus is on getting off the island. He insists on keeping the fire burning as a distress signal. Ralph's leadership provides peace and order to the island while Jack's leadership makes chaos.…

The first point that will be discussed is power, the theme power is seen throughout the movie and novel continually; in “Lord of the Flies” power is evident when the group of boys elect Ralph to be chief, he willingly accepted this role as being the leader of the clan. He took charge by appointing positions for everyone like hunters, gathers, cleaners and etc.”Ralph, Ralph let him be chief with the trumpet thing......’they could be the army-‘’or hunter”. (Golding 19) Ralph displayed his power by taking control of the situation. This helps to differentiate between a good leader and a bad leader through their actions in dealing with power. “We don’t want you,” said jack, flatly, “Three’s enough.” (Golding 21) This show how arrogant jack really was and how bad of a leader he reveals himself to be. But on the other hand Ralph is much more of an inspirational example than jack “we’ve got to have special people looking after…

Jack believes he best fits the leadership role: “‘I ought to be chief,’ said Jack with simple arrogance”’(Golding 22). When the tribe elects Ralph, Jack tries to exploit Ralph’s poor leadership compared to his superior leadership qualification: “‘And you shut up! Who are you, anyway? Sitting there, telling people what to do. You can't hunt…’”(Golding 91). Moreover, Jack even portrays a leader’s intellect and rationality as a flaw: “’He is like Piggy. He says things like Piggy. He isn't a proper chief’”(Golding 126). Jack believes that since he successfully self-defines as the essential barbaric tyrant, he fits the position better than the mild-mannered Ralph. Interestingly, although Jack typically despises Ralph and his inadequate leadership, when Ralph shares the leadership spotlight, Jack seems satisfied: “’What do you want them to be?’…’Hunters.’ Jack and Ralph smiled at each other with a shy liking”(Golding…

Good leadership can be found in an individual that is persevering, does not give up, and encourages others to reach their goals. In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, Ralph and Jack are both given the chance to become leaders. However, both of them display negative qualities that reflect onto the rest of the group. There are two types of leaders: one who makes the right choice and one who chooses the popular decision of the people even though it might not be the right choice. Rosalynn Carter expresses this idea perfectly by quoting, “A leader takes the people where they want to go. A great leader takes the people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.” In Lord of the Flies, Ralph is the great leader while Jack is just another leader. Throughout the book, Ralph leads with rationality and sense, while Jack leads with fear, which shows that fear is all controlling. Golding conveys that fear is all controlling through Ralph’s leadership, Jack’s priorities, and Jack’s leadership.…

The role of a leader is challenging task to take on, especially when you're a young boy. As proven in the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, in order to be an effective leader, you have to have no moral character. Being a leader without moral character leads to more effective ruling, because your followers will obey you more than a ruler with moral character, who tends to be more lenient with their style of ruling. The challenge was taken by originally taken on by Ralph, who with moral character, tried to keep the island in order, and Jack, who without moral character, ruled more efficiently and had more people listen to his orders. Being a leader without moral character, such as Jack, is more effective than being a leader with moral…

A leader is someone who directs or guides a group. However, good leadership is the ability to set priorities and accomplish what needs to be done with the feelings of the group in mind. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph demonstrates many traits that would be considered good leadership. At times he also lacks them, and if he had demonstrated them he could have helped the situation greatly. Ralph understands how people feel and has the ability to respect that and make decisions based off of people’s feelings. He also has the ability to be very serious, which is a good leadership trait if you want to accomplish something. Ralph was also very wise and always made the decisions that he thought were best for the group. In addition, Ralph is very hard working, once he knows what needs to be done he will work very hard to accomplish that task. Throughout the book Ralph demonstrates he is empathetic towards other people’s feelings, he is serious towards his goal, he makes wise decisions, and he is hardworking towards the task at hand.…
