Lord of the Flies Essay

William Golding in his hit book, Lord of the Flies, disscusses that everyone has the inborn characteristic of evil and savagery suppressed inside of them. In Lord of the Flies all of the boys seem innocent but outside of society's rules and regulations, they do whatever they can to survive. This aspect of boys is what Golding describes as evil, their human instincts for survival. Golding wrote this book to show that evil is inside everyone and also that humans are weak, but in the book not everyone was as weak. In the beginning of the book when boys first crashed onto the island one of the boys, Jack, had the sudden urge to hunt. At first he was weak and backed out of the opportunity, "I was going to," he said, "I was choosing a place...next time!!!" page 31, chapter 1. Once he does kill the pig this becomes his obsession and what he spent most of his time doing, distancing himself from Ralph and the others. Eventually Jack seperated from the group and created his own tribe full of hunters. The hunters later on in chapter 11 on page 181 kill piggy with no remorse as Jack says, "See? See? That's what you'll get! I meant that!". Jack didn't stop there, he and the rest of the tribe go for Ralph next, starting a halocaust of the island,"The fire was a big one...he could see the sun-splashed ground over an area of perhaps fifty yards from where he lay." Golding shows Jack as the first person to be consumed by the evil. His actions and words of evil infected the other boys, two of them being Ralph and Roger. Ralph was elected leader of the group and carried the most responsibility. Jack only hunted, him and his hunter never helped Ralph with the shelter nor did they keep the fire going at the most crucial time. Eventually Ralph began giving in to Jack's obssession and began hunting with Jack,"Ralph too was fighting to get near, to get a handful of that brown, vulnerable flesh. The desire to squeeze and hurt was over-mastering." page 114-115 chapter 7. Soon enough
