Lookout Mountain: A Short Story
The thin nighttime mountain air fills my lungs as the sunsets over the peaks. He reaches over and takes my hand in his. The breeze whips through my hair and shimmies through the fingers of the trees. Soft music drifts from the pavilion with the faint hum of voices, Haley’s in particular standing out. Kodi and I had less than fourteen hours left in the Colorado mountains together. Soon, he’d go back to Reed Springs and I’d go back to Willard and everything will be like it was before. But it’s not. At the church, Haley and I got in the van with the rest of our youth group, headed to Lookout Mountain. We were having our Daily Devotional and Large Group Gathering there that afternoon. We drove up the rolling humps of earth, my mind was racing. My heart was beating faster than the speed of a Nascar racer. I was …show more content…
Yes I will,” I responded.
He leaned down and kissed me. My whole body caught fire, sending tingles down my back, into my arms, and all the way down to my feet. I smiled into his kiss and he laughed. I heard Haley and some other girls not far off laughing and giggling at us. But it didn’t matter. I was too distracted to notice any longer.
We walked over, sat on a boulder and looked out over the mountains. When he was holding my hand it seemed as if everything in the world was so right. We sang some songs as a big group and then went over our Daily Devotions. Then it was time to go back to the church. Since Kodi and I were in different vans, we had to say goodbye.
He told me he loved me, the next morning before we had to leave to go home. He hugged me tightly. Every part of me once again filled with the energy that connected us. I felt like flying but he was holding me down. He smiled at me and I smiled back. We walked over to his friends, his arm around my waist. His friends D.J. and John both gave me a hug before getting in their van. Kodi turned to me.
“So, I guess I have to leave,” he said, sadness spewing from his voice. “I wish you could come with

Thinking back I remember that week as one of the best weeks of my life. Never had I been so fascinated by nature, I never really thought that the outdoors could offer more than the indoors could, yet I still enjoyed it very much. Making many new friends along the way, the wonders of nature never fail to impress. On May 4, 2015 the seventh grade class of Fairmont North Tustin left John Wayne airport to depart to Phoenix, Arizona with our Assistant Principal Mr.Drake. As soon as I got to the airport I checked in my bag, and went to the gate with our class. Our whole 7th grade class was beaming with excitement. But none of us knew the wonderful adventures that awaited us in the Great Outdoors.…

“ Come and eat.” Joe,the leader of the trip, struggled to say because he was so tired, “Breakfast is going to be light this morning because we have along day head of us.” We all struggled to get out of our tents considering it was 5:30am and there was a mountain we had to start climbing in a half hour. All thirteen of us stood in a line like we did the morning before while we packed our lunches. The options available to us were an apple, cheese stick, peanut butter and jelly to make sandwiches, but only 2 per person, yogurt and 2 bottles of water. All of that would have to fit into a back pack with us the would be stuck to our backs for the rest of the day. “Time to load!” Joe shouted. We all got into the van that seated 16, single file until very seat was filled.…

Tyler sat in the car waiting, he was anticipating everything to go wrong at any given moment, that always happened. We will probably hit a moose or something, he thought as Tyler, and his dad were driving through the British Columbia rockies, driving to where they would eventually set up camp, in a forested area. Two of his friends were going to meet him there, as long as everything went according to plan, which it seemed to never do. But after five and a half hours of driving, they finally made it. Tyler dropped out of the small SUV and looked around at his surroundings, their campsite was small, about the size of a large classroom, with trees as tall as giants surrounding them, down…

As my head comes out of the cold water, my hair dripping, and my mascara smeared I knew in that moment that I was renewed. I walk out of the pool full of passion and happiness to greet my best friend, Elena. As I begin walking out the bathroom I find Elena waiting for me. We hug and cry together in happiness knowing we had done something the both of us believed strongly in. We dry ourselves off and sit down together surrounded by all of our friends watching as the other kids got baptized. The smiles on our faces could not leave as we watched our pastors baptize these kids that we had grown very close to.…

I remember when I was young and I had to decide what color of popsicle I wanted and it seemed like it would be the hardest decision I’d have to make. These type of decisions get easier as I became older, but I remember when I was young and had to make a pretty fast and life saving decision. My childhood best friend Ethan and I thought it was the perfect day to go out for a cooling dip at Lookout Lake. We got on our Bermuda trunks and raced out of my beat down, old, white ranch house, all the way across our small town to the docks. The best place to hang out was at our hometown lake; the cooling freshness of the water and how the trees slightly glossed over us as we swam kept us from the blazing sun. The beautiful oranges and blues of the…

What would I say when I meet them? Would they still be the same? Would they remember me? All these thoughts had whirled around in my head on the ride to our hotel on Smoky Mountain. My parents and I were on our way to Smoky Mountain on a vacation with our friends from Canada. There were 3 adults who were Shital, Alex, and Jinal and 3 kids who were Alay (15 years old), Pearl (7 years old), and Sophie (6 years old). As the car screeched to a stop, I took a deep, shuddering breath and helped tote our bags inside. As soon as I stepped into the brightly lit hotel, my vision was suddenly obscured by a bunch of frizzy hair. It was my mom’s friend from Canada, Shital. She had sped across the room and squeezed me so tight, I felt as if my lungs were…

“Hey, we are in Tennessee”, my husband said as he lightly shook my shoulder until I acknowledged him with opening my grayish green eyes. “Good morning beautiful, only a half an hour away from the vacation you have always wanted us to take.” Instantly the widest smile you could ever imagine covered my face. I was so happy to be there rolling up an over these bright green hills into the mountains that harbor the cabin we would soon occupy. “I love you so much.” “I cannot even begin to explain how much this means to me Adam”. I said as we past the sign displaying a two mile away conformation that was truly needed do to the navigation becoming obsolete when we began winding thru the one lane roads. “Beautiful,” I said as we pulled up to the cabin.” ”Absolutely beautiful, even more so then I imagined”, said Adam as the slightest drops of rain began to fall from one of the few clouds that floated above. “I wonder what the weather is forecasted to be this week”. I asked as we walked hand in hand with my romantic husband into the two story cabin and on to making my dream come true.…
