“In the dark beside me, she smelled of sweat and sunshine and vanilla, and on that thin-mooned night I could see little more than her silhouette except for when she smoked, when the burning cherry of the cigarette washed her face in the pale red light. But even in the dark, I could see her eyes-fierce emeralds. She had the kind of eyes that predisposed you to supporting her every endeavor.”(19).
Miles, the speaker, is looking at Alaska, a girl he just met in his new boarding school. He’s completely overwhelmed by her. Her beauty and intelligence is nothing he’s ever experienced. He’s comparing her eyes to emeralds, saying they are so blue he can even see them in the dark. He thinks her eyes are charming that anything she wants to achieve, he will want to do with her. Just looking at her eyes makes him a servant to her. She took his breath away. I think she is interesting because he’s only known her for about 2 days and it seems like he’s already in love with her. It appears he might even be vulnerable to love.

He compares people to rain saying he is drizzle and she is a hurricane. He feels vulnerable and so little compared to Alaska. He is a “drizzle” which is so small and light. He might feel as if he isn’t good enough for her, because he isn’t as strong as her personality wise. Alaska has a huge personality full of life and intelligence when he might look at himself as boring and nothing compared to her as a “hurricane.” I think this is important because it show how much of an impact this girl is on his life. He thinks about her all the time and the thought of her leaves him
