Look But Risking Discrimination
In the society we all live in today, your outside beauty is focused on more than your inner beauty. Many businesses have realized how to apply these views to their own benefit. They have focused on trends and realized it is more profitable to hire those with good looks. However, since many popular businesses are only hiring certain ethnicities, body types, and genders in order to project the company image, it has been questioned if these companies are just discriminating against people. In this article “Going for the Look, but Risking Discrimination” by Steven Greenhouse from the New York times it says “hiring attractive people is not necessarily illegal, but discriminating on the basis of age, sex, and ethnicity is.” Most companies claim …show more content…
She looked confused and frustrated. I asked her anyway “excuse me do you know where the Levis are?” She said, “No I’m not sure but you can ask him” and she pointed to some other employee. Later I found out she had been working there for 3 months. It was obvious they had hired her for her good looks and not her experience. In my eyes I feel that it isn’t fair that a person who has experience didn’t get hired. Not only was It it unfair, it was annoying and her beauty was distracting. As a consumer I was feeling nervous to approach her and ask her for help. When I decided to ask for help she didn’t even know where the pants were. Discrimination is when they judge you by sex, age, gender, race/ color, and religion. Discrimination occurs for most of these American clothing companies because many of them want Pure American white, tall beautiful/handsome, blue eyed and so forth. Many of these clothing companies have had many lawsuits for discrimination. Mainly Abercrombie and Fitch are one example of discrimination that happened a couple of months ago. The employees of Abercrombie and Fitch were forced not to hire a young Muslim lady because she did not want to remove her

    According to Rhode, the United States has made many laws in the past years to protect groups of people that are being discriminated based on sex, religion, race, or disability, yet there is no official law protecting employees that are being discriminated on their looks.
