Persepolis Writing Assignment

Chose one of the following essay prompts and write an essay based Persepolis. I am looking for two things here: 1) to get an overall impression of your writing skill and 2) to assess your comprehension of the graphic novel (this will be assigned a grade). Your grade will be determined by how you explain the relevance of your examples and how they illuminate an overall argument about Marjane’s life.

1. How has Marjane been educated through her experience by the end of the movie? Be sure to use examples from the book and cite pages and images that back up your argument, as well as examples from the movie. Feel free to compare instances from your own life to hers, as this may help frame your essay.

2. Compare the life changes Marjane goes through in the graphic novel with her time spent in Vienna and back in Iran in the film. Which allowed her to grow more as a person, her time at home in Iran or her time in Vienna as a teenager? Feel free to compare instances from your own life to hers, as this may help frame your essay.

In the graphic novel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, the author uses words as well as illustrations in order to deliver the story of a young Iranian girl raised by a modern family in a traditionalist country. Satrapi composes her illustrations to reflect the current emotion or state of her character in order to accentuate certain events. She often uses splash frames and incorporates Persian flourishes into her artwork. Some character issues that are expressed through panel composition are Marjane’s identity crises as modern or traditionalist and Iranian or Austrian, her feelings of isolation in deserted Tehran, her feelings of distance and helplessness when leaving her parents at the airport, and homesickness brought up by blatant differences…
