CSU starts talks of placing campuses on semester system By Raul Cabral Staff Writer Tuesday, March 26, 2013
In an effort to streamline the academic calendar, the Cal State University is considering converting six of its campuses from a quarter system to a semester system, according to Erik Fallis, a CSU spokesman.
The switch, if implemented, would be phased in throughout the next few years, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo President Jeffrey D. Armstrong said in an email to the entire campus last week.
“Following discussion, there was a clear understanding by Chancellor [Timothy P.] White and all presidents that the benefits of a common calendar outweigh individual campus preferences,” Armstrong said in the email.

According to Fallis, the switch would ultimately be in the best interest of all students in the CSU system.
“Having all the universities under one academic calendar provides certain advantages, one of them being the ability to transfer between [CSU] campuses more easily,” he said. “Change is often met with trepidation, as is the case with some of the campuses.”
Justin Velasco, a university spokesman at Cal Poly Pomona, said the decision to move from a quarter system to a semester system is out of the university’s hands.
“Ultimately, this is a decision that will be made by the [CSU] Chancellor’s Office, and we will go along with whatever they decide,” Velasco said.
Although the switch is being seriously considered, Fallis said that nothing is imminent.
“While we are moving in the direction of converting campuses from quarter to semester systems, there is no timeline, and no final decision has been made,” Fallis said.
CSU students currently on the quarter system said they felt anxious about the proposed

The traditional schedule for school is outdated because in the old days, it allowed for children to help harvest crops during the summer. Now, the long summer just enables kids to be lazy and easily forget what they learned at the end of the previous school year. If a year round school year were to be implemented, kids would not be able to be as lazy and breaks would not be so long as to let kids forget a whole bunch of their school curriculum.…

When the words “year-round school” are thrown out, many students will try and stop you right there and run away as quick as they can. A common misconception of “year-round schooling” is that it means more school, but actually it is just a rescheduling of the current traditional schedule. Instead of getting close to three months of break in the summer, the year-round schedule suggests having multiple shorter breaks throughout the year in order for students to retain more information and to help students from getting “burnt out” or losing focus from long periods of school without a break. Year-round schooling needs to be the new schedule for schools in the United States since it increases information retention with students, helps students keep an interest in school, and helps to avoid stress with students, which will improve students ' learning in school compared to the traditional schedule which most schools are operating on currently. Year-round schooling has been proven to not only help students retain information in-between breaks more efficiently, but also certain types of year-round schedules have actually been able to increase a school’s occupancy as well as increase students’ general interest in school.…

Year-round school is a new concept that school districts around the country are starting to adapt. These new schedules include periodic breaks throughout the year rather than a large summer break like the traditional school schedules. Administrations are starting to consider this new type of curriculum because they believe the breaks will boost energy and motivation in school as well as improve test scores. Critics of the new schedule often argue that attending school year round will wear students out and take away the vast opportunities offered by the summer break. A year-round curriculum does not have a beneficial effect on student and teacher performance.…

Moving on, there has been a current trend of graduating in 5 years then in 4 year. Many students take that root to delay their entrance to the real world. As well as having an easier time in school. Unfortunately it’s financially a bad idea because it’s adding another year of expenses. “The longer you extend campus life, the more debt you rack up. It’s not just the cost of tuition, there’s rent, food, books and etc.” The “take 5” campaign persuades students to take five courses each semester to graduate on…

    Year Long School Year

Many schools in the United States are beginning to change their school calendar so their students attend class all year round. The changes still allow the students time off in the summer, but they do not have the three months of break most students in America receive traditionally. Instead, they get a break of a couple weeks in the summer, and the remainder of the time is divided up and put into other breaks throughout the year. All schools in America should switch to a year-round calendar to accommodate the different and higher level of learning needed to be successful in our changing world and society. The traditional school system was designed many years ago when our country was an agricultural nation. Therefore, the school calendar was developed having a long break in the summer so students could assist their family with cultivating crops and other aspects of farm life. The traditional school calendar was not a calendar for higher learning, and should be extended to meet the needs of modern day students. There are many explanations as to why the traditional school calendar should be changed.…
