Loneliness In John Steinbeck's 'Of Mice And Men'

November 10, 2016 The Loneliness Of Mice and Men Loneliness is a very common feeling that everyone goes through at some point in life. John Steinbeck uses loneliness as a way to show that no one has to be alone and people do have a meaning to life. Of mice and men is a story about two men, George and Lennie, who are on their way to work on a ranch in Soledad, California to make money and get a little piece of land to call their own. At the ranch, George constantly reminds Lennie to avoid the troubles of the ranch. Unfortunately, things do not end the way they dreamed. Humans crave contact with others to give life meaning. Despite their needs for companionship, people still set up barriers that retain loneliness and they sustain those barriers by being inhumane to each other. The rabbits are so important to Lennie because to him they represent love, safety, peace, and most importantly comfort. Lennie even begs George to tell …show more content…
The other’s reactions to George and Lennie traveling together portrays that, in Steinbeck’s world, such a thing is unusual. “I seen the guys that go around on the ranches alone. That ain't no good. They don't have no fun. After a long time they get mean. They get wantin’ to fight all the time” states Candy after meeting the two of them. George’s care for Lennie and the Dream of the farm are attempts to break the pattern of loneliness that is inevitably part of the human behavior. Even the most social and friendly people go through a stage of loneliness. It is something no one can avoid, but it does not define a person. It shows that the person hasn't found their true meaning yet. George constantly beats down on Lennie with his words, but he doesn't care. It doesn't matter what they are talking about it's just the connection of actually having someone to talk
