Literary Analysis: Terms
Many literature students are expected to be familiar with the basic terms listed below (and discussed in more depth in your text). Keep this study guide with your text. At the beginning of each reading assignment, write the elements of literature pertaining to the particular type of literature at the beginning of the short story or poem. After reading, define them in your text for class discussion, quizzes, and test preparation. To understand literature, it is necessary that you ask yourself certain questions, such as "what is the theme of this story?" or "why does the author use this particular type of imagery?" You are not necessarily reading for pleasure--although it is sincerely hoped you will derive pleasure

In American literature, several themes are evident which reflect and define our society. The dominant ones might be innocence/experience, life/death, appearance/reality, free will/fate, madness/sanity, love/hate, society/individual, known/unknown. Themes may have a single, instead of a dual nature as well. The theme of a story may be a mid-life crisis, or imagination, or the duality of humankind (contradictions).
Character--Imaginary people created by the writer. In literature authors use literary elements to enhance their stories. Both “The Treasure of Lemon Brown”, by Walter Dean Myers, and “The Lottery”, by Shirley Jackson, use literary elements to enhance their stories. In “The Treasure of Lemon Brown,” Theme is used to create a message encrypted into the story. In “The Lottery” foreshadowing is used to make it seem as if you should have anticipated the ending. This helps to form a more unique style for each story.…

My favorite fiction story I read in the textbook is “Hunters in the Snow” by Wolff. This story is a literary fiction because it interpreted real life situations. All through the story, Tub was faced with the harsh treatment of Kenny and Frank until Tub finally had enough. Everything started turning around for Tub after he shot Kenny in the woods. At the end of the story the readers find out that they made the wrong turn going towards the hospital but Tub, Kenny, and Frank don’t know that so it leaves the following scene as a mystery. Fiction literature is extravagant for whatever reason anyone would like because of the fantasy it brings…

Imagination is the power to create. It is the key component to literature. Without imagination, there won't be an interesting story, I believe. Imagination is not only important to the writer, it helps the reader broaden their interpretation of the story. "When you allow reading to unlock your imagination, your connection sets the stage for intellectual engagement. It allows the experience of reading literature to include the pursuit of ideas and knowledge." (Clugston, R.W 2010). With imagination comes genre. Choosing what category or type of literature. It can be a short story, poem, or drama. "It can be used to make broad distinctions or to identify specific categories within a broad category. The short story and the novel, for example, are specific literary genres within the broad category of fiction."(Clugston, R.W.2010). I think another very important component to literature is the tone. Setting the tone will let the reader know what attitude the literary work is going. For example, "the final lines in Updike's poem create an initial feeling of sympathy, which is likely to become empathy if the reader reflects on the dog's predicament in not being able to communicate its final struggle." (Clugston, R.W 2010). Tone is followed by image. Image represents the experience that go through your senses, the idea. Writers use specific language to describe the imagery. Again, in Frost's and Updike's poems about the dog, "In Frost's image of an old dog there's an initial feeling of sadness, but if the reader reflects on what the poem has to say about the inevitable life cycle that both the dog and the speaker face, sadness is likely to fade somewhat into acceptance."…

Literature is, by my understanding, a means to critic society and individuals or the way the world is behaving. Writers of Literature write literature to provide a new way of seeing things that might be different from our point of view. There have been stories and tales for thousands of years, but novels must combine a few unique characteristics in order to be defined as such. First, a novel is written down, rather than told through an oral account. Secondly, novels are meant to be fictional in form, differentiating them from myths, which are said to have their basis in reality or theology. Although some modern scholars argue differently, there is no truly established guideline for length, point-of-view, or even establishment of a moral or philosophical point in novels.…

Encarta World English Dictionary defines literature as written works, such as fiction, poetry, short stories and criticism that are recognized as having important or permanent artistic value (Encarta, 2007). According to Wikipedia defines short stories tend to be less complex than novels. Usually a short story focuses on one incident; has a single plot, a single setting, and a small number of characters; and covers a short period of time.
