Romeo and Juliet Literary Analysis
In the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, marriage customs are very strict with high expectations. In the time period of Romeo and Juliet, people had numerous dating styles leading to marriage, they married for different reasons, and had various wedding planning events.
In the fifteenth century, courtship was the primary dating custom. Usually, a father arranged for the daughter to court, or date, a person whom he thought would be a good provider for his daughter. Most of the time, the father would pick a young man who had a wealthy family so his daughter would have an easy life. Courtship is a very conservative dating style, and was practiced by most people in the fifteenth century (GaleGroup). Boys were expected to call their girlfriends every day to check on them, and see them a certain number of times a week. If the boy had plans, he was supposed to tell the girl so she would know where he was at if she needed to talk to him. Promise rings were very common because if one is in courtship, the couple would most likely end up married. Even today, some people still follow the rules of the strict dating, which involves no bodily contact until marriage. Today’s marriages take place almost a full year after the engagement, to allow for various preparations. However in the play, Juliet and Paris were scheduled to get married in the same week Capulet gave Paris permission to marry Juliet. In today’s time, women usually don’t get married until around mid-twenties or even early thirties, but in the play, Juliet was only fourteen years old, as was her mother, when she was supposed to get
