By the year 2081 the search for true equality of all United Stated citizens has led to the creation of changes of the construction.
In this case the effort has not been to raise the standards of those handicapped by their differences or imperfections.
Instead, those who are gifted with superior intellect, physical beauty or strength are punished.
All Americans are handicapped so that no one should feel ugly, stupid or unworthy.
Those people who are beautiful must wear hideous masks, intelligent people must wear headsets that jangle their brains and nerves with a series of loud sounds.

Another important theme in this story are equality in rules. The the story the egalitarian society is dependent on all people respecting the laws. In order to make sure that everyone follows the rules they using manipulation.
In my opinion, today’s society has been surrounded by technology and materialism, Kurt says, “Nobody is smarter than anybody else. Nobody is better looking than anybody else. Nobody is stronger or quicker than anybody else.” When I read what words he describe everyone being equal, “smarter,” “better looking,” and “stronger or quicker,” immediately came to my mind that those words are common qualities that people are judged on in today’s society. People are constantly trying to be better than others, In the exact way I believe Kurt choose those words because he feels the same.
By Kurt choosing to end the story in this way, I believe it enhanced his purpose and thoughts of progression. In my own opinion, I think Kurt’s purpose was to show the readers of the book that if society today were to keep up with being judgmental and always caring about what others thought, the government would have no choice to put some kind of law
