Literary Analysis

Hallucination is the involvement of sensing things while your awake that appear to be real, but instead they have been created by the mind. This was occurring to Gottfried Wolfgang in “The Adventure of The German Student”. Wolfgang was always dreaming of this beautiful woman, who is his ideal girl, he consistently has her in his mind until one day he actually sees her. At first he thought he was dreaming, which might be the case, until he talked to her and brought her home to spend the night. Wolfgang was so excited to finally have the woman of his dream until it is crushed at the end. Many believe that this could have been part of witchcraft or that it was part of his imagination. Wolfgang was very intellectual but he was very precise with everything he was a theorist, a person concerned with the theoretical aspects of a subject, he didn’t believe on what was said or done day by day. His family was very concerned of him because they believed he was mentally ill, so they proclaimed that a change of environment would do him well and maybe betters him, but due to his isolation he became more indulged in the fantasy world. Could this woman have been part of his fantasy world or was he trying to be possessed by something that’s after him? I believe that it was something that was trying very hard to possess him since he was living in Germany and found a way when he was in Paris because it’s the city of love and it knew that he would be gullible enough to fall for a beautiful woman that fits his ideal girl description.
