Literacy Narrative People learn to read and write in many different ways. Everyone has a different story with the way they learned to read and write. I'm the youngest child of 3; I have an older brother and sister. As a kid my mom was a stay at home mom, she would read to me while my brother and sister were in school. She tried her hardest to teach me to read and write. I just never showed any interest in learning to read. Then one day, I was in my room just playing with a book. My mom
Walked by and said she heard me trying to say words in the book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, And Blue Fish By Dr. Seuss. This book was my favorite from now on; I carried it everywhere we went. I tried to learn all the words in the entire book. I finally got to the point were I could read every single word in the book. I learned to read this book by my mom reading it to me over and over again. I struggled a lot with reading any other books; all I wanted to read was One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish By Dr. Seuss. The only problem was that I wasn’t increasing my vocabulary, because this was the only book I was reading. My mom got really frustrated with hearing the same book over and over again. She tried to give me other books to read, I used to look but never actually read the story. My mom just desperately wanted me to read other books. I was 6 years old and my favorite book was One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish By Dr. Seuss. All of the sudden I started reading the newspaper with my dad. I never understood actually what it was saying; I just chose words that seemed to be easy enough for me to say. I would read the comic section and thought it was the funniest thing ever. This helped increase my vocabulary a lot. Then I started reading all different types of books. The books my mom had bought me had helped with my vocabulary, and then she started to try and make me write sentences or at least words. I hated to write, I would rather read a book about something interesting. I
Started kindergarten at Seven Pines Elementary. I loved to read and writing was something I hated to do. When I started first grade, my mom had to get me a tutor because I knew how to write something’s just not as much as a first grader should. My tutors name was Mrs. Thompson, she was so nice. She made me write short paragraphs, and form simple sentences. I began to like to write, and I could form sentences. She then helped me valuate different types of books. She also explained that it was important to read and write everyday to increase the skills I have learned. Mrs. Thompson never let me say I can't do it and she never once let me quit. My mom and Mrs. Thompson inspired me to keep going. Also they showed me that quitting was never an option and I had to at least try to do something. I learned to compromise with my mom and Mrs. Thompson. I would always try and if I could not do time would stop and ask for help. In the 5th grade when I had to start writing book reports and essays, I started to hate English. I started to learn the importance of literacy, it was important for me to read and write! Literacy changed my perceptions on life, I knew that if I wanted to succeed in life I need to improve my reading and writing semiskilled I started the eighth grade I heard people saying all you did in English was read and write. I was so nervous because I knew it was important for me to write but I still did not like to do it. Literacy changed my life a lot, I volunteered with the English department. It was a group of eighth graders who would go into the sixth graders classrooms and would help and edit and peer review their essays. This showed me that it would have been so helpful if I would've had someone do that while I was in the sixth grade. It helped me with my writing as well; I saw the simple mistakes they were making so I would check my work twice so I did not make the same mistakes. I thrived to help the sixth graders succeed with their writing. The sixth graders wrote us thank you letters and said that their grades had improve a tremendous amount
With our help. Most people do not succeed with learning to write and read because their family does not support them and push them to do it. My family showed me tons of support throughout the years with teaching me to read and write. Some people just need the extra push to do something. With my family helping me succeed it has helped me in life now. It has affected me throughout high school and is now going to help me in my freshman year in college. It will help me remember to never quit and always keep trying with everything I do. Reading and writing are things that are necessary to get through day to day life.

I remember when I was young and my grandmother decided to take me to the library with her. She put me into “The Little Readers Club” while she went off to look for books to read. In the club we were told to look for a book and read it and then share what the book was about. I remember getting up and look at all the shelves filled with thousands and thousands of books. I remember thinking, “how could a person write so much and not run out of words?” putting aside my curiousity, I searched for a book and found a book called “Spaghetti in a hot dog bun.” After I picked the book I came and sat down and saw all the other kids smiling and reading their books like they were professionals as I sat there not knowing how to read at all. I felt dumb at the moment and unfit, so all I did was look at the pictures and try to come up with what I thought the story was about. When it came to sharing time; I was too embarrassed to tell the club leader that I didn’t read my story because I couldn’t read. So when it came to my turn to share my story I stood up and said, “My book is about a girl that likes….uh…” I just stood there and froze; I realized that I never knew what the characters in the book liked or what. I stood there as everybody stared at me as I slowly felt myself tearing up. When I finally couldn’t handle the embarrassment, I ran and hid myself behind two big shelves and didn’t come out until I heard my grandmother calling…

Essay 1 Literacy Narrative Overview of the Assignment In this first essay, you will be writing a what is known as a Literacy Narrative. You can approach this assignment in numerous ways, provided that you examine a specific moment in your own development as a reader and/or writer the only catch being that this has to be an experience you can revisit in some way (i.e., a book you can re-read, or an essay, story, poem, etc. that you wrote that you can still find a copy of to read). You could explore the issue from any number of perspectives the first time you read a book that you really enjoyed or the first time you felt good about something you wrote, or, on the other hand, the point when you realized you hated reading or when you became discouraged about writing (or when you decided you werent interested enough to try). The overall goal of the essay in other words, the thesis that youll be illustrating throughout is to communicate why this experience impacted you in the way it did and how you view it now, long after it happened. Has your view, or memory, of the situation changed Why or why not How does the experience still affect you as a reader or writer Note that this is not just a personal story dont just write about what happened, but about how you think it affects you and/or whether you think your memory of the situation is still accurate. Regardless of which approach you take, your essay should satisfy the basic requirements of the assignment, as described below. Evaluation The essay contains a sophisticated level of reflection upon the experience and its impact on your personal literacy. There is a clear thesis/direction for the essay that is apparent by the end of the introduction, and which is developed in the subsequent portions of the essay. Discussion and description are precise and relatable the essay speaks in concrete terms about concrete events, rather than vaguely or about abstract ideas that the reader may or may not be able to…

For me, learning to read and write was long and felt like a drag to me; I took reading and writing for granted and never thought of the great advantages that every book had. It all started at home when I was five years old and my mom was teaching me how to write my name. In my head, I had trouble understanding on what I wrote but as far as I know that was my name. Finally the day came and it was time for me to go to school. I was scared; I did not know where I was, and I did not know a single word in English. There was no way my mom would stick me in an English classroom. They moved me to a Spanish one; there I had a more clear idea of what I was learning. The teacher was a sweet, calm lady; she had patience with bad writing, to this day I have not figured out whether she understood it or not. Once I learned my ABC’s here came the small words of animals and things like for example “oso” which means bear in Spanish. Learning to read and write seamed so boring. I had to sit down and do homework which required my attention, but I preferred to draw and play. Learning was torture; I would read very slowly, even when I tried to read those small picture books for small kids, I was useless by that time.…

As I write this, I have my four year old niece sitting next to me saying, “Wow, you have a lot of drawing on your page!” All I can do is laugh to myself and think that was once me, not knowing the meaning of each word and innocently intrigued by the simple presence of words on a paper. This interest would soon turn into the curiosity to read. Hoping to read as gracefully as my mother when she read bible stories before my twin sister and I would drift off to sleep, I was devastated to find out I didn’t read as well as the other children. In fact, I had to be pulled from my reading class to a remedial class with one on one interaction between the teacher and student. As disappointed as I was then, I’ll…

English is not my first language. In fact, I didn’t learn it well enough to have a conversation until I was about 10 years old. I remember the embarrassment of being new to a country I called home after living in Mexico for years. Things changed quickly the first day of 8th grade. I remember being energetically greeted by a slender athletic man in his fifties in a muggy summer morning. The hum of the air conditioning as welcome sound as we found our seats in this room that smelled of being closed the last few months. His name was Mr. Goodman and he was, by most accounts, an “asshole.” This was a descriptor of which he was proud. Even the other faculty thought so. He was a strange man, but he had his reasons. Surprisingly, he was also one of the best teacher’s I’ve encountered to this day. He had a brutally visceral way of making you care about learning. His class would soon change the way I spoke English for the rest of my life.…

My early literacy experience was not a big of a deal for me at an early age. When I was in school I always took a reading and writing course with a grain of salt, it was just one more class on my schedule. Literature did not really appeal to me in my early experience. I always think that why do I need to take a literature course in order for me to succeed in the future.…

Growing up in a bilingual household has affected my literacy journey. It affected my Spanish writing because I focused more on English. This course has helped me look at English literacy beyond the point of it being another credit to simply cross off my list. A specific reading from this course that I was able to really retain and relate to was Victor Villanueva's excerpt from Bootstraps: From an Academic of Color. Here he brought up several points that made me think differently about literacy and how it can affect my life now or even after college. “One professor said my writing was too formulaic. One professor said it was to novel. Another wrote: ‘nonsense.’ “ (Villanueva 112) I really like this quote because relating it back to literacy and my college experience ahead of me, it makes me understand that there will be times…

Typically, people think of reading when they see a novel or a short story, but I think of reading when I’m out on the baseball field. When I hear the word “reading”, unlike most people, I think of a green grassy baseball diamond at night, with the lights lighting it up, filled with fans in the stands. Believe it or not, I read all the time on the field. I read the ball coming off the bat when I’m playing in the field. When I hear the “ding” of the metal bat and hard, rubber ball colliding, I know that there is a chance I could make a great play. I can see the ball getting bigger and bigger as in approaches me. I read the ball coming out of the pitcher’s hand, picking up the spin as soon as I can so I can know when and where to swing to make solid contact with the ball. I even read people’s body language when I’m pitching. I can tell a lot about the batter by how he’s standing and the facial expression on his face.…

Literacy Narrative; Too Much to Say The problem that plagues the modern mind is a surplus of content. Increasingly in my generation, with the trend to binge on internet freedom, the average person has seen too much to be able to form a clear opinion. With an ever-changing fleet of perspectives invading one’s mind, it is as if one is screaming in a riot to try and convince themselves of their own opinion. The most influential instructor I’ve been lead by, a burly yeti of an English teacher/ wrestling coach; Aaron Cantrell, told me clearly one day that I ‘just had too much to say’. That was it; Eureka! He had struck the chord loudly enough for me to hear that it was made up of individual strings. When I looked down at the prompt he had thrown around the room, this leaflet that seemed daunting and futile, I saw that buried in the complex of Times New Roman, there was really only one question. There was one solitary string that needed to be voiced at a time to complete the chord the prompt requested. I only needed to have one idea at a time. Line by line, one string after another, I plucked each sentence out, and in the disarray of jumbled context and my grammatical errors; I heard a resemblance of harmony. With small adjustments in placement and a tune-up of fanciful synonyms, I began to hear the chord I wanted. ‘It takes bravery’ The Yeti-man proclaimed. ‘It takes courage to have an opinion and stick with it long enough to fully understand it yourself’. In a fit of fantastic allusions, to which I can show no decency to try and recreate, he said, ‘the secret is to believe what you say’. Now in a swirling mind, filled with today’s troubles, tomorrow’s worries, yesterday’s regret and consequential foresight, it’s hard to know who you really are. That’s the rub though, the practice; to alleviate the overwhelming amount of information that you’ve borne witness to, by taking a prompt one idea at a time. It’s all about figuring…

From the time when I was a little boy, growing up in Graves County, Kentucky, I have had problems with my reading and writing. Things never seemed to click for me, a trait that the teachers attributed to a mild case of dyslexia mixed with a healthy dose of attention deficit disorder. I knew, however, that no disorder was the cause of my distaste of reading and writing. Rather, there was nothing really interesting surrounding me that would grab my interest in the classroom. The teachers I encountered never took any interest in what their students wanted to read or write; they developed assignments based on what the curriculum, a course of study developed by some politicians at the Board of Education, told them to do. This work was so far removed from what we, as students were experiencing in our own lives, and the assignments were so boring that they could have put an insomniac to sleep. However, my life changed the day I met my Junior English teacher, Mr. Clark Duncan.…

Through discourse and representation the media constructs texts to be read or viewed in a certain way by a specific audience. The text which will be analysed within this essay is the Givenchy Advertisement for the men’s fragrance ‘Pour Homme’. Through the discourse of gender, this advertisement represents women as submissive and sexual objects whose only purpose is to seduce men, and in doing so it privileges traditional masculine views of femininity whilst marginalising women. Through various gaps and silences the advertisement only includes certain aspects so that it is viewed in a certain way, and portrays certain values and meanings.…

It was a beautiful summer day at the beginning of my senior year. Students were anxious to meet their teachers and begin the last year of their high school career. There were those excited to graduate that knew exactly what they wanted to do with their life. Then there were those like me who had no idea what college they would be attending the following year. I knew I wanted to go to college, but I had no idea which one I wanted to attend or what my major would be. After I arrived that morning, I walked into the crowded hallway of my 4A public school on my way to my first and hardest class, pre-calculus AP. I was one of the last ones to enter the classroom and had no other choice but to sit next to my ex-best friend. It was already a bad day. Once the bell rang, Mr. Rogers, an older teacher with gray hair and big circular glasses, stood in front of the classroom and began teaching our first lesson. Within five minutes of the lesson, I was already lost. Once he turned around to see if anyone had questions, I was the first one to raise my hand.…

My earliest memories of writing were when I was like 5 or 6 years old. I was in second grade at my school called “Franciscanas”. I was very young I remember my mom and dad helping me with everything at home, the only thing I knew how to write was my name other than that I did not know how to write anything else. After I started my second grade class I remember I could write a lot more, and that is how my earliest memories of writing began. I also started reading when I was like 6 or 7 years old. I remember that my dad had some cards with letters like “ CA, LA, SA, LO” and many more, after I started reading the little flash cards, he started putting a lot more together so they would become a word and that is how I remember I started my reading. To me they were great experiences because it taught me a lot, imagine me without knowing how to read and write, I would not be able to be here today. I am glad I had my mom, my dad, and my school teachers to teach me how to read and write. As always you know that we at all times get upset or have a negative thought when we can do what we try, so for me it was a little bit of both a negative and a positive experience but overall it was a positive experience because I finally got to read and write how I was supposed to. The only thing that has changed is that I have gotten better every day and I learn from each mistake I…
