Literacy Essay
When i was in kindergarten, we used to read comprehension books or if thats what you called them. we would read them to see what reading level we were on. at the age of five, i had a fourth grade reading level..AT FIVE YEARS OLD! every year it seemed like i would go up a level in reading.
My mom and grandma also helped me get into reading and writing. My mom taught me how to read and my grandma to write. I’m glad that they helped me excel in school, without them i don’t know where i would be right now. I probably wouldn’t be at Upstate. I’d probably be at McDonald’s flippin’ burgers or fries. i enjoy reading some books. i hate long boring books. i like books with a lot of spice and “relations” books because they keep my attention and i can read them all day. Also, I hate writing long papers..I can usually sum up what I have to say with a page or two. In high school is really where i started writing more than one page of what I need to write about. i hated every minute of it but it all helped me in the end.
Being a Multi-Sport Athlete, It’s hard to be focused on school and be focused on the court or track..while i was jumping those hurdles, i should have been jumping in those books and doing what i had to do first. my senior year of high school was by far the best year of my high school career. I really buckled down in my books because there was no way I was not going let myself not graduate on time. I ended the year with mostly A’s and B’s and one C..come on…it was anatomy. There was one saying my basketball coach always said to all his players, ” Go Hard or Go Home.” So I went my hardest.
Then, I finally made my decision to come to college right before the end of the school year. I was originally going to go to Charleston Southern but then i came to Upstate and fell in love. I just loved the atmosphere and i felt like i could do my next four years here. So far i’m enjoying my year at Upstate. The teachers are nice and they seem to care..
Overall, I love

Reading: somewhere, somehow it is all around us. Everyone learned to read through different methods and sources. As I grew up, education was not a question. I was taught to focus on school and everything else would fall into place. I knew that I would attend college and be given the opportunity to have a great education. However, other people are less fortunate than I have been. Minorities and people living in poverty cannot afford to read books and expand their knowledge. This hurts them as they age and causes them to fall behind in school. Literacy is very important to our culture, as it affects how our country is ran and decisions that are made in state and national offices.…

The most vivid memory I have of writing is back in the tenth grade. I had the best teacher ever in regards to writing. I used to view writing as a senseless waste of time. Writing, in my opinion, at the time was always noted to be formal and boring; however, my tenth grade English teacher, Mrs. Perez, changed my whole perception of writing and how it affects humanity. One day after class she pulled me aside and recommended a book known as, “His Dark Materials,” which is about a young girl who, with her allies, fought for the discovery of a dark substance called the “Dust.” The book single handedly altered my mental picture of writing and creativity. Writing can be about anything in the universe, and the possibilities are endless. The main point, however, which ties everything together, is imagination. One’s imagination can truly be defined as infinite to the power of infinite, because it contains numerous amounts of details and features on life and the world itself. How does this tie to writing one may ask. Well an elaborate imagination helps to create an elaborate piece of writing. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.”…

In high school, I developed into a better reader by being challenged to read more difficult books, poems, essays, and analyze more of what was being read. I feel like this prepared me for the real world and college but being an elementary teacher, I am going all the way back to what I learned and read in elementary school and now applying that to my…

The older I got, the more I learned to love reading. I would sit in my room after school and read for hours some days. My mother brought me to the library in Park Rapids every week. I would get five books every time. By the time I was in the third grade, I was reading The Magic Tree House series. I kept a book with me at all times. Though I loved reading, I often struggled with the writing assignments. The more the teachers made me write, the more I came to dislike writing.…

Early childhood literacy experiences can contribute heavily on a child’s early successes and difficulties once they reach formal schooling. Early literacy experiences can really put a kid in front and be more ready once they start school. Parents play an important part to this as they control a lot of a child’s early experiences with literacy. The culture of where kids grow up also can either benefit a kid’s literacy or it can put the kids behind other students. These experiences can be the differences of a kid passing his early English courses or failing them.…

As I wrote my literacy narrative, I learned many new things about how to perfect my writing. I used to always begin my writing process with an outline, because this is what I was taught in high school, but this time I tried a new strategy. I learned this new strategy from the text, Shitty First Drafts. First I typed up a bunch of nonsense that I wanted in my paper. Then I went back and put it all in order and made sense of it. This definitely made writing a 1000-word narrative a whole lot easier. Although after I had done this I realized that I didn’t go back in and change my past and present tense verbs. This caused some confusion later when I had others peer edit my paper, but I made sure to fix those errors on my final draft. I learned a…

The Balanced Literacy instructional approach can be defined as “a literacy program that includes the strongest elements of both whole language and phonics” (Smith). Balanced Literacy is a program that uses combined strategies to provide an optimal learning experience for children. The program involves “teaching by reading to the students, having students read independently, and reading with students” (Smith). Balanced Literacy is made up of five components: the read aloud, guided reading, shared reading, independent reading, and word study. The components of Balanced Literacy can be implemented in the classroom, by teacher and student-initiated activities, each day. According to Spiegel, “teachers using the Balanced Literacy approach must make a thoughtful choice each day about the activities used to help each child become a better reader and writer”…

Experience outside of the classroom can contribute to the advancement of literacy learning. The same can also be said that literacy is experienced only inside the classroom. I have had the luxury of experiencing both. The literacy I have gained in past courses and work experience is characterized by attending class, completing tasks in the work place, peer and instructor critique, personal habits, and literacy acculturation.…

Through taking taking this course. I believed to have gained some valuable insight into how I think, and as to how exactly and clearly I write down my thoughts. Although I wouldn’t say that I gained much insight into exactly how I thin, however I did gain valuable insight into how exactly I put my thoughts into words. By taking this class, I have learned to transcribes my thoughts into words for a reader to see, allowing me to share my ideas with fellow peers rather than keeping my thoughts to myself and failing to share unique ideas. Although this process was relativity short, spanning only about 3-4 months, this process is evidence through the works I created in this class, from the literacy narrative to the E-portfolio in which is a living…

Once again, doubling school and football was a very tough job for someone like me. I had to take time away from my family just to finish up essays, math worksheets, and reading books. Once the season had ended I decided to not play basketball and be able to spend my break being with my family and friends. Once spring rolled around I decided to better myself and become a better athlete and run track. This sport has more done for me than I can imagine it ever would. It boosted my self confidence and ability to do better in school. Granted, track had taken up a good amount of time but it allowed me to get my school work done in a timely manner. Being a student athlete had never been easier. Running track was the best decision I have ever made. Making this decision didn't only make my grades go up but among other things my athleticism had skyrocketed. I was faster and stronger. I have been dealing with being a student athlete ever since freshman year. It now being my senior year I have a lot of huge life decisions to make while also dealing with sports and bringing my GPA up. The life of a student athlete brings many challenges and rewards. I am looking forward to this year and the obstacles it shoots towards…

My favorite genre is fiction such as Gary Paulsen's Hatchet novel. I like fiction more than any other genre because the author can express any idea he or she feels like coming up with. It makes the book more exciting and suspenseful. Such as in a non fiction book it would be like Jerry bought an apple at the store, opposed to a fiction book it could be like Jerry drove his car into the store and stole an apple. It's more creative therefore it is more exciting.…

I firmly believe that home is the first classroom and parents are the first teachers. I was senior in high school when it hit me how far off course I was. Basketball was my first priority, instead of school, since it was my last year in high school. My grades had always been good before my senior year. I was a straight A student and always doing the best I can in school. When the senior year came around, I realized that I could play basketball in college because many people had told me that I have the potential to play college and my coaches believe that too. So every day, I dedicated myself and put all my focus in basketball, so I can play college ball. My grades were slipping down pretty fast, but it didn’t matter to me, because I didn’t think high school grades were that important and could affect me at any point. Until one…
