Philippines Literature * Compilation of Filipino writings

Purpose: 1. Promote cultural heritage 2. Rhetorical modeling 3. Individual development

Literary Values: 1. Technical Values – structure and component of literary piece 2. Affective Values – awareness of emotions, mood, tone and attitude 3. Ideational Values – awareness of themes, visions and universal truths

Literary Standards: 1. Artistry – workmanship or craftiness. Appeals to sense of beauty 2. Intellectual Values – stimulates thinking 3. Suggestiveness – associated with the emotional aspect of the literary piece 4. Spiritual Values – brings out the understanding of moral values that makes us better persons 5. Permanence – makes literature endure the test of time 6. Universality – appeals to all races, place and time 7. Style – author’s manner of putting words together on the page

Elements of Fiction: 1. Character – player in a story
Types:
* According to Role Played: * Protagonist * Antagonist * Stereotype – of the same personality/mold * According to development * Dynamic/Round – changes personality in the story * Static/Flat – maintains the same personality in the story

Characterization – a way of establishing the personality/characters of protagonist

Methods of Characterization: * Through the use of name * Appearance * Dialogue/character’s words * Character’s action * Other character’s words

2. Plot – organization of the incidents in a story
Types:
* Linear – follows chronological order of events * Circular – uses flashbacks to complete the story *
