Lisa Ho
Lisa Ho was born in 1963 in Albury on the boarder of Victoria and New South Wales. From the young age of 4 she was already making patterns out of newspaper and sewing with the help of her grandmother who was a tailor. By the age of 10 she had her own sewing machine and was making things for herself and her four sisters nearly every day. She graduated from Sydney Technical College in 1981. After working for another company for a year she decided to start her own line. Along with many other fashion designers Lisa started her label at Paddington Markets and after receiving a lot of media and retail attention, decided to start her Lisa Ho label. The brand continued to expand and develop and is now one of Australia’s most well-known brands. One of Lisa Ho biggest inspiration came from her grandmother. She was a tailor and from a very young age she aspired to have a job to do with fashion, clothes and sewing.
Lisa ho’s design philosophy is influenced by the romanticism of vintage textiles. During her 23 years on the forefront of the Australian fashion industry she has designed swimwear, jackets, pants, dresses, skirts and even wedding dresses. Lisa ho takes a simple design and adds an extra touch to make it a piece of high fashion and individuality. Her collections usually consist of some plainer designs and some very extravagant pieces. I think this balances out nicely and makes the collection wearable for more customers.
Her designs have been described as feminine with a strong modern edge. Lisa Ho’s brand has exclusive fabrics and prints that are created by Lisa. Her interests in vintage styled clothing and design ideas have been similar over her career. Since the age of 15 she has been collecting European-Vintage style clothing and because of this fascination incorporates this into her collections. She now has a whole room filled with Vintage clothing that inspires her and included amongst these are even some Lisa Ho designs from former collections. When

Her iconic jersey wrap dresses are still produced today, and still have the popularity that they did in the 70’s. Without the innovative style created by Diane von Furstenberg the women’s fashion industry would not have grown into the empire that it is today. Her designs not only re-created feminism for women in fashion, she also showed women how they could overcome the conservative societal perception of women at that time. Her simple wrap dress created an hourglass silhouette that many women began to desire. Diane has an unparalleled compassion for woman, which is easily seen in her designs. She wants women to love themselves first, and love what their wearing…

There has been a surge, in recent years, in interest in vintage clothing and this has been reflected in price as well. The deliberate wearing of vintage clothing rejects social norms of what is fashionable and trendy and proves that individuals can create their own sense of identity and originality. Often more affordable than high street shops and definitely unique, ‘thrifting’ has become similar to antique shopping. There are a multitude of events targeted at vintage-loving people that brings them together like dance classes, themed nights out, pop up fairs and even speed dating. Vintage clothes seem to be viewed as more individual and unique than contemporary fashion, even though at one point in time, they were most probably the norm in fashion. But the treasure hunting to find a piece of clothing and the combination of different garments confers the wearer a sense of…

Throughout the history of women’s fashion it is known that each decade creates its own symbolic fashion statement within that time frame. The change in women’s fashion advertising is hard to go un-noticed once looked upon. In the 1940’s women’s fashion seemed to be relatively tolerable and not very difficult to strive for when it came to a women’s perspective. As opposed to today’s fashion advertisement for women; the image that “defines” beauty is what some would describe as unreachable without drastic sacrifice. The women in the image of a 1940s women’s advertisement compared to women in an image of today’s fashion could almost be described as a women that failed to make the cut in strive of todays “beauty”. If you ask me, women’s fashion advertisement has snowballed downhill since the 1940s.…
