Conclusion:
The purpose for this experiment is to analyze the melting and boiling point of specific types of liquid and solid. It is useful to know their melting and boiling point of a substance to state whether or not such substance is pure or if it is combination of different chemcials.
I was able to learn how to determine the melting point and boiling point of a substance by analyzing its temperature whenever acetamide turned into a liquid and when Isopropyl started to emerge bubbles. Since acetamide and lsopropyl had the similar melting; boiling points, it is to my understanding that the melting point and boiling point depends on the properties of the substance, not the state of its matter.

During the experiement, safety with tools and chemicals were crucial. The glass of capillary tube was very fragile, which was difficult during the process of breaking down the acetamide. cautious appoarch was made whenever dealing with burner-fuel. Acetamide was very small and was hard to tell their location whenever I tried to break them down in to small pieces to put inside the capillary.

There were several errors which could have affected the experiment. The tap water I used to heat the liquid and solid may had different properties inside, which can cause the boiling point to be off. Pure H2O is recommeneded to conduct more precise measurement. The capillary tube I used was too fragile whenever it was used to break down the acetamide.

During this experiment, we used recrystallization methods in order to help in the purification of the unknown solid, as well as drying and vacuum filtration. We then ground the unknown and combined it with different chemicals (such as acetanilide or phenacetin) and used the melting point ranges to determine the identity. We used the Mel-Temp method in order to measure the melting points. (It is important to remember that if a chemical is mixed with a differing chemical, the melting point is decreased drastically, but if it is mixed with a component very similar in chemical make up, the melting point will not differ much from the expected.)…

In this experiment, the sample, acetanilide was weighted to be 1.523 grams. The sample appeared to be a pale mixture of brown flakes before it was crushed into small flakes. When boiling the sample with 25 mL of water over the 75 mL of water steam bath, the sample started to change to dark drown flakes in some areas. When the water began to evaporate in the flask contain the impure acetanilide, 10 mL of water was added to keep it boiling. A hot vacuum filtration was conducted and after all the impurities were removed, the flask was set to cool down to room temperature before being placed into an ice bath to be recrystallized. During the filtration, changes in the sample occurred. The sample of brown flakes changed into snow-white crystals. Another vacuum filtration had to take place to obtain the crystals. When conducting the vacuum filtration, the small filter paper had to be weighed before hand for later purposes. The weight of the small filter paper was 0.098 grams. After the crystals were obtained in the small filter paper, it was folded up in a bigger filter paper to…

    Two Types of Solids

The purpose of this lab is to study some of the physical properties of two types of solids – ionic and molecular. The samples used are sodium chloride (ionic) and camphor (molecular). The physical properties studied are odour, hardness, melting point, solubility in water and solubility in 2-propanol. It is observed that some of the physical properties of sodium chloride are no odours, hard, a high melting point, soluble in water and insoluble in 2-propanol; some of the physical properties of camphor are a strong odour, soft, a low melting point, insoluble in water and soluble in 2-propanol. A few conclusions can be drawn from these observations. The particles in ionic solids are held tightly by the force of attraction between ions with opposite charge, because of this strong force of attraction of positive and negative, ionic solids tend to have no odours, a high melting point and they are hard. The particles in molecular solids are held by the van der Waals force of attraction, because of this relatively weak force of attraction, molecular solids have a strong odour, a low melting point and they are soft. Sodium chloride dissolving in only water (not in 2-propanol) and camphor dissolving in only 2-propanol (not in water) have proved that polar solids are soluble in polar liquids only, and non-polar solids are soluble in non-polar liquids only.…

It can be concluded that the melting point of the substances: naphthalene (81°C-85°C), biphenyl (71°C-73°C), and a mixture of C (42°C-56°C) can be determined by placing a small amount of the substance in a capillary tube attached to a thermometer, in heating water and then taking the temperature of the substance (when it first begins to…

Experiment II involved two kinds of distillation techniques: simple and fractional. Simple distillation was done to separate ethyl acetate—which has a usual boiling point of 77º—from a less volatile component, while fractional distillation was done to distinguish an ethyl acetate/n-butyl acetate mixture, which has boiling points of 77º and 125 º, respectively.…

I found it really interesting that there were not very many changes to the substance. I really thought that almost all of them would change or have some kind of with the addition of HCl. I was really surprised that most of the substances remained unchanged. The ones that did change happen instantly when another condition was added to the test tube. The HCl was the chemical that changed the substances the most is the main observation that I saw.…

There are many different substances that affect the freezing and boiling points of water. This experiment was designed to test the effects of five liquid and five solid substances/mixtures on the freezing and boiling points of water. It was hypothesized that if we tested five liquid and five solid substances/mixtures then the results would show that the solids would have a greater affect. Using these guidelines the experimentation was completed and the data was recorded. It was determined that the hypothesis was supported. Salt had by far the greatest effect on the freezing and boiling point. Baking soda had the next greatest effect but still had almost a 50% smaller effect than salt. The rest of the data showed that the hypothesis was supported because the solid substances had the greatest effect by far with few exceptions. From this experiment it can be concluded that when changing the freezing and boiling point of water, salt is still the best option although other substances/mixtures like Baking Soda, Sugar, and Molasses can still be effective.…

The purpose of this experiment was to use various methods of analysis to determine the identity of an unknown volatile liquid. In the first part of the experiment, the molecular mass was found by using water to find the volume of a flask through calculations and this as well as the mass of the gas of the unknown liquid were put into the a manipulated version of the ideal gas equation to determine the molar mass of the liquid, which was 14.21g per mole. The next part was used to determine the density of the volatile liquid. First the volatile liquid was placed in a pyncometer and massed; water was then placed in the same (now clean and empty) pyncometer and massed. The density equation was manipulated using the data for water to solve for the mL of the capillary tube. This new information was used to find the density of the liquid, which was 1.33g/mL. The last part of the experiment was used to determine the boiling point of the volatile liquid. A test tube was placed inverted in a flask filled with the unknown liquid that was in a water bath heating. When bubbles from the test tube slowed and began to go back into the test tube, the temperature was taken and this served as a measurement of the boiling point. The average measured boiling point was 60.2°C. The measured data was inadequate to identify the liquid with. The unknown liquid was revealed to be methanol; the revealed identity could then be used to compare the data to the actual information for methanol. The molar mass was found to have a percent error of 55.6%, the density had a percent error of 68.1% and the boiling point had one of 6.95%. The measured data for the boiling point was fairly accurate, but the molar mass and the density both had very large percent error. The reasons for this will be discussed more in the discussion.…
