Hamlet: Prince of Denmark tells the story of a young prince who wishes to avenge the death of his father, who is killed by his own brother. Four hundred years later, Walt Disney produced a movie called The Lion King (TLK) with almost the exact same storyline. Many can argue that Hamlet and TLK are complete parallels of each, but it can be suggested that although they share similarities through the purpose and characters, the two works diverge when the motives and actions of the characters are broken down, suggesting different themes for each work; Hamlet: a more psychologically damaged and sorrow theme; and TLK: a more heroic theme.…

In The Lion King Timon and Pumbaa are two characters that help Simba most when he is down, from his father’s death. Timon and Pumbaa go with Simba everywhere kind of like Horatio. They are always there for him and will give their life for their friend. In Hamlet Horatio tries to take his life to show respect to Hamlet, and in The Lion King Timon and Pumbaa go with Simba to fight off Hyenas in the Pride Land. Even though The Lion King is based off of Hamlet there are still differences between the characters. One major difference is when Hamlet leave for England Horatio stays home. Each prince also had a separation from the one’s that they loved most in order to revenge their father’s deaths. In the process of completing their tasks their uncles also poisoned their mothers, leaving them without any parents. Although their journeys sound quite similar so far, they also have many differences. Toward the end of Hamlet, Hamlet’s love, Ophelia, went mad and drowned; he accidentally killed her father, Polonius; and he also killed her brother, Laertes, when he attempted to murder Hamlet with a sword that had been dipped in a highly potent poison. After all of this had occurred Hamlet took the same sword that killed Laertes and would soon kill him and slit Claudius’s throat and made him drink the drink that poisoned his mother.( Hamlet 174,175) On the other hand in Lion King after Scar killed Simba’s father and poisoned his mother only one more death occurred. Simba and Scar had a spine-chilling battle where Simba killed Scar. After that Simba became king and Nala became queen, and the land returned to its prosperous state. Claudius is unique in many ways. When we first see claudius, we see him as an intelligent ruler. The crown on his head represents him being the new King of Denmark. He gives a speech that makes his country proud and in it, addresses his brothers death. The magic hat shows that although he seems innocent, he is not. Hamlet says “O villain, villain, smiling damned villain.”(I, v, 107) Hamlet is saying that although Claudius is smiling and happy, he is still a villain. He deceives characters into thinking he is one person, when in reality he is completely different. The string puppet shows Claudius’ manipulative ways. These sneaky and manipulative ways lead to the death of Polonius in Hamlet’s hands. In Act 4 Claudius tries to convince Laertes that he was not at all responsible for Polonius's death. Instead of punishing Hamlet for Polonius’ murder himself, he sent the prince to…

Then Claudius plans to have another attempt in a selfish murder against his nephew-step-son Hamlet. When Claudius realizes that Hamlet suspects that Claudius killed Hamlet’s father, Claudius does whatever he can to get rid of Hamlet. First Claudius sends Hamlet to England to keep him from telling anyone in Denmark about his crime. The King says, “Do it, England, for like the hectic in my blood he rages, and thou must cure me. Till I know ’tis done” (Act 4. Scene 4). The King is relieved that Hamlet is gone, and can no longer tell his secret; but when Hamlet returns the King feels his secret is threatened. This threat causes the King to set up a plan to kill Hamlet, so that his secret is safe for good. He sets up the dual that is intended to kill Hamlet, and he comes up with a back-up plan in case the dual does not work. The King says, “And that he calls for drink, I’ll have prepared him A chalice for the nonce, whereon but sipping, if he by chance escape your venomed stuck” (Act 4. Scene 7). This blindness of greed, and selfishness caused the King to create a plan to kill Hamlet, which backfired and killed everyone, including the…
