Experiment No._ 2_ Group No./Time/Day: Gr.3/7:30-10am/W

I. Objective: To determine the linear expansion of the rod.
II. Apparatus: Linear expansion apparatus, Brass & Aluminium rods, Thermometer, Electric heater, Steel tape, Boiler, Rubber hose, Extension cord, Screw driver.
III. Sketch:

IV. Data and Results Item Used | Symbol | Unit | Sample Used | | | | Brass | Aluminium | Initial length of Rod | LO | cm | 61cm | 60.8cm | Initial temperature of the Rod | TL | °C | 30°C | 30°C | Final temperature of Rod | TF | °C | 99°C | 99°C | Expansion of the Rod | ∆L | cm | 0.08cm | 0.095cm | Coefficient of Linear expansion of Rod | Computed | αC | 1/°C | 1.9x10-5 | 2.3x10-5 | | Standard | αS | 1/°C | 2.0x10-5 | 2.4x10-5 | % Error | | | 5% | 5.65% |

Formula Used: α=∆LL∆T % E=Cscomputed-Cs(Standard)Cs(Standard) ×100
V. Conclusion
A. Questions & Answers
1. Why couldn’t a meter stick be used to measure the expansion of the rod?
Answer:
Probably because the meter stick is long and is not accurate enough to measure the small amount of expansion of the rod. You need something smaller and more accurate.
2. Rod A, which is 30cm long, expands by 0.045cm when heated from 0°C to 100°C. Rod b, also 30cm long expands by 0.075cm for the same change in temperature. A third Rod C, also 30cm long is made up of the materials of the rod A and B, connected end to end. It expands by 0.065cm when heated from 0°C. Calculate the initial lengths of rods A and B in rod C.
Answer:

B. Generalization: When the temperature of a substance increases, its length will also increase. The amount of change in length is
