Always Outdated

Ham Porter: “You play ball like a girl!” [entire group stands in shocked silence] Phillips: “What did you say?” Ham Porter: “You heard me.” Phillips:
“Tomorrow. Noon, at our field. Be there, buffalo-butt breath.” This is an excerpt from the film, “The Sandlot” that was released in 1993, but was set in the 1960’s. What you see here is an example of the phrase “like a girl,” actually having reference and meaning from one young man to another. It’s stating that Phillips plays baseball like a young girl, which was a huge insult and blow to his esteem, and all the others who heard the statement were blown away that it was even said; almost as if it were violent vulgar language. During the 2015 Super Bowl, the company Always, constructed and released a commercial that stated the phrase “like a girl,” still to this day has a valid form of hurt towards young girls. What they are wanting from this commercial is to help support young girls go through puberty with confidence, which is a wonderful thing; but “like a girl,” is a very outdated insult to girls. For the current generation “like a girl,” being an insult has faded away. Their claim that this simple phrase has this big of an impact, or even any impact at all is outdated, and wrong. If this commercial were to air from the 60’s through the 90’s it Wethington2 might have actual meaning and place to be talked about, but now to the girls of this day and age it gives no bother to them. The idea they 're trying to get across for young girls to have more confidence could and should be represented differently.
They should be encouraging girls to be themselves, and to not worry about what others think. Girls of this generation are more focused on being popular, and having more quantity of friends rather than quality. What Always tried to do was not a bad thing at all; just the way they went about doing so was not as effective as it could have been. The fact that they decided to air an advertisement that is promoting women 's strength on a day dedicated to a male dominated sport, is bold and does send a message. One message even weeks after is still talked about. Whether or not the ad presented the best way it could have is irrelevant, the word 's out and woman everywhere, are voicing their opinion on social media, and any way they can publicly. It 's more of a public service than an advertisement, which may or may not help them sell their product, but that wasn 't their intentions. All in all if you are trying to get your point across to millions upon millions of viewers, go about it in an effective way that isn 't outdated or wrong. Always in no way shape or form did a bad thing, they just did it the wrong way. Their Super Bowl appearance has left a mark on many girls and even boys (negative and positive), so at the end of the day they got the job done.

This advertisement can be seen as an appeal to emotion due to the fact it is showing a little girl holding hands with two mannequins showing she either has no parents or the parents she has aren’t always easy to talk to. The ad is presented in black and white to show sadness and loneliness. On the ad there is written a phrase, the phrase is: “Every child needs a family.” it is written in a little girl/boys handwriting to show that the message is being conveyed by a child to show the message is coming directly from her/him. More often than not the reason why children are left alone is because they are put up for adoption at a young age and they are generally never adopted from their adoptive homes. Kids are put up for adoption due to the fact either someone got pregnant and couldn’t keep him or her or the fact that they didn’t want to take the responsibility to have to raise a child. An argument often occurs when talking about adoption, “adoption is better than just getting an abortion.” Yes, this may be true but giving a child up for adoption is putting them in a situation that doesn’t always have a positive outcome. Sometimes when getting older an adoptive child may eventually find out they were adopted and they may end up not feeling as accepted or as a part of the family as they once thought they were which may cause them to isolate themselves. In this advertisement created by Unicef this exact…

The producers of this commercial knew its target audience and went after it. It had a strong attention getter. Right from the beginning this commercial had my attention and maintained it throughout the entirety of the advertisement. It had strong appeals to pathos, ethos, and logos. This commercial worked for me, but for others I can see how this commercial came up short in getting their attention. For example, my views towards the music choice, the girl, and scenery corresponded well with what I wanted to see, but if you asked my mother about the commercial I’m sure there would be a completely different reaction to the commercial. In fact when I was watching the commercial in class in preparation for writing this analysis the girl who sits behind me watched the commercial over my shoulder and said that she thought the commercial was “ stupid”. It wasn’t until this moment that I realized the importance of pathos, ethos, and logos and how different each person’s appeals truly…

The commercial uses the element of ethos to appeal to authority. The commercial does this by using a physically attractive male who immediately demands your attention at the beginning of the commercial by commanding “look at me; now look at your man, now back at me”. This immediately builds up a sense of respect and authority from the speaker, and helps build up the credibility of the commercial.…

In the article “Tow Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt” by Jean Kilbourne, which was published in 1999, describes how women are shown in today advertisements. Sex in advertising has taken a completely bizarre way to advertise about a certain product. Women are usually shown in inappropriate matter to attract consumer’s attention. Most of the advertisements today are based on pornography features. In addition, the use of sex content in advertisements has a negative impact on consumers because it shows women as a cheap tool in business. Those kinds of advertisements indicate that men are always the rulers and women are their easy target. Sexuality plays an important role in marketing and advertising today. Big companies earn…

With the advents of technology, advertisements depict women as desirable commodities this has poisoned the minds of many young women ultimately morphing values and beliefs. Women are shown in subordinate, submissive, and male pleasing roles. Media and advertisement representation reflects and reinforces sexism in society today. The social standards of beauty and feminism are set by Hollywood’s greatest celebrities. They do this by alluring women into buying cosmetic products affirming the concept of female beauty. Companies such as “bebe”, apply the same technique to persuade women in buying their apparel. In the ad “bebe”, the company portrays a woman holding a bright red lipstick getting off a taxi while flaunting a revealing dress. On the other side, she is shown obeying all rules, in bed with black revealing lingerie with an enticing text, “9pm to 5am obey all the rules, you miss all the fun”. The ad amplifies its message and allures its audience to disobey all the rules if they want to become “the bad girl” by purchasing “bebe’s” apparel.…

The rhetorical pathos appeal is used to evoke an intentional emotion in someone; which is exactly what this commercial planned to do. The videos that appeared at the start and throughout the commercial consisted of beaten, disfigured, and disheartened animals who had the saddest, loneliest expressions on their faces. The background music was melancholic and gloomy. The adjectives used by Sarah McLauchlan were dismal: “helpless”, “abused”, “beaten”, and “neglected”. All of these elements played a highly important role in inducing the feeling of sadness in the audience by creating a morose tone. The ASPCA wanted to form this feeling in the viewers to make them want to donate and help the cause, and they achieved it…

Kincaid writes “Girl” as if she is a mother lecturing her daughter. Throughout the story, instruction is given. “This is how you smile to someone you don’t like too much; this is how to someone you don’t like at all; this is how you smile to someone you like completely” and “this is how to behave in the presence of men who don’t know you very well, and this way they won’t recognize immediately the slut I have warned you against becoming” (Gioia, Kennedy, Backpack Literature 47) .This part of the short story explains how women should act in public by various reasons. Kincaid is trying to instruct young girls on how to handle different situations in the appropriate ways. Kincaid looks for many ways to instruct young girl in the right direction. She tells the young girls what not to do and what to do; she clearly states what young girls should take part of in life. She intends the advice to both help her daughter and scold her at the same time. Kincaid uses semicolons to separate the disapproves and words of wisdom but often repeats herself, especially to warn her daughter against becoming a “slut.”…

“Of all the nasty outcomes predicted for women’s liberation…none was more alarming than the suggestion that women would eventually become just like men.” This quote I thought about it as men are saying that is a bad thing that women COULD be just like men. I challenge this quote or the meaning that men are trying to say. I challenge because by their physical difference(which means the way they think also) and by the way the men do what women should be doing and the way women do what men should be doing.…
