Analysis Essay – How to Read Literature Like a Professor
One of the major recurring techniques that Foster discusses in his novel that really caught my attention would have to be the technique in chapter 2, which is the technique symbolism. The definition of symbolism is the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character. In chapter 2 Foster tells about a symbolism that takes place in this chapter where the characters are having a meal together. This is an example of symbolism because basically having a meal together is sort of saying that we are a family together. He also talks about it as he says “in the real world,

The meal shows whether you dislike the person or if you like the person. In this chapter Foster also explains in clear statements the description of the food isn’t just to inform you at all what is being eaten. He is basically trying to catch your attention in the moment and be able to give you a better understanding on the realism of the moment. The reason Foster tries to grasp the reader’s attention by giving them detailed information is so that the reader can feel like they are a part of the story. It also gives the reader sort of an idea on where its taking place or as to what is happening in the …show more content…
The bible is a widely universal text that many people recognize stories and references. Foster goes on and talks about saying that knowledge of biblical references is not ground breaking in reading literature. Instead, Foster states that it mainly makes the story more timeless with its theme filled with deep throughout old and new tales alike. An example in the chapter is when Foster talks about the book “Beloved” by Tom Morrison, he talks about the four horsemen on white horses coming to take her children away. In Revelation which is in the bible says that when the four horsemen come it means it is Judgement Day. The author in this book was trying to show you that the lady’s world was going to end as she knew it was ending because her kids were being taken away from her. In this specific chapter I learned that we can find deeper meanings in literature of all kinds through biblical references. As Foster said in the chapter “it is not ground breaking, but it adds to the stories and make them timeless”. It changes what we are reading and how we are reading it because when we notice a possible reference we can think it through and have a deeper understanding of the

The book then goes from talking about race to talking about religion because of the events and the poem titles that reference from the Bible itself. The passages used were from Romans 12:1, 1 Corinthians 13:11, and Psalm 150. These passages have a statement that “To believe in God is to love/ What no one can see.” The New Testament is a book that is so complex that there is no possible way to get a certain theme or themes for them. For me, I have found that Jericho Brown’s work is personal, so his work is more on the lines of race, religion, and sexuality. Brown’s book The New Testament overall inspires the readers that read it to make a positive change on the world and impact yourself to change for yourself and for the better…

After reading The Letter From Sullivan Ballou i noticed that it was quite similar to An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge. Both had something to do with the love the men felt for their wives and the reality of knowing that they might be dead soon. This story and letter have the same meaning but put into two different ideas. Farquhar knew was going to be hung for wrong doing and Ballou Knew he had a chance of surviving or dying in war, They both thought about their wives while knowing this.…

In literature, a quest has 5 aspects. They are: our quester, a place to go, a stated reason to go there, challenges and trials, and the real reason to go. He seeks adventures. A place to go is Jackson’s Island. After running away, Huckleberry plans to live in Jackson’s island, but plans change and eventually he finds himself heading down the Mississippi River with Jim. In chapter 12, of How to Read Literature Like A Professor, Thomas Foster describes how a writer might symbolize almost everything in a novel: starting with a simple object to the most complex characters. According to Foster, not everyone will find a symbol; those that eventually do however will not interpret the meaning of the symbol the same way as others do. Some writers use direct symbols, but some let us use our imagination to find the true hidden meaning. In addition, Foster explains how if we want to figure out the deeper meaning of a symbol, we should “use a variety of tools on it: questions, experience, preexisting knowledge” (Foster 107). Since “a symbol can’t be reduced to standing for only one thing,” Foster encourages readers to “… engage that other creative intelligence” and to “listen…

Any individual reading literature has surely experienced multiple stories that are either based on or allude to the Bible. Having the Bible be the base of our foundation of knowledge will allow for many concepts to be understood, as the foundations of modern society were originally based upon the morals present in such stories. On page 66 in the Educated imagination, Frye identifies that "There are all…

    6) “Most professional students of literature learn to take in the foreground detail while seeing the detail reveals. Like the symbolic imagination, this is a function of being able to distance oneself from the story, to look beyond the purely affective level of plot, drama, characters.
