A diorama of one of the battles fought between the Filipinos and the Spaniards.
The museum was divided into different rooms. Each one of them is depicting some of the highlights of the Philippine history. It has dioramas- moving replicas of people and objects placed in scenes that tell the remarkable stories of the Philippines' past.
Statues of the different Filipino heroes were placed inside the Lights and Sounds Museum.
Each scene is to be "experienced" one by one. It is dramatically narrated by a voice over with some background music. The lights are also in place to direct the attention of the audience to the main characters. A tour facilitator is also present to lead the audience from one room to another.
We were brought to Europe inside the Lights and Sounds Museum and experienced the life of Jose Rizal and his fellow Filipinos when they were there.
The life of Jose Rizal was one of the highlights in the Lights and Sound Museum. It was an instant trip to Europe when we were brought by the tour facilitator to Jose Rizal's life in Spain and Germany.

We were able to "experience" the national hero's life through the images being depicted in the dioramas. The dioramas were not anymore at their best conditions today but I still enjoyed the entire show, nonetheless.

There was even a room showcasing the characters of Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. It was nice to go back once again to the novels written by Jose Rizal. This time, with life-size dioramas and dramatic narrations.
The friars warned the Filipinos about reading Rizal's novels.
The Lights and Sounds Museum was a project of the former Tourism Secretary, Richard Gordon. The aim of the museum is to retell the history of the Philippines to local and foreign visitors in an interactive and fun setting.
The building of Intramuros.
Another highlight of the show is the story of how Intramuros, the Walled City, was built. This topic wasn't discussed that much during my classes in history in high school and college.
The Filipinos weren't allowed to enter inside Intramuros- except the slaves.
Because of the Lights and Sounds Museum, I have learned that ordinary Filipinos- except the special guests and the slaves- weren't allowed to enter the walls of Intramuros back then. It was exclusive to the Spaniards- the government officials, the friars and their guests. It was also said that the Spaniards made it a very happy place. Spaniards held feasts inside it every now and then, leaving the Filipinos outside hungry and oppressed.

Lights and Sounds Museum is located at Sta. Lucia cor. Victoria Sts. The tour requires a minimum fee of PhP 1,000 per tour. The first show starts at 10:00 AM and the last show at 6:00 PM. For reservations or inquiries, you may contact (02) 524 2827.

A method of critiquing colonial dominance within museums, is critical museology. Shelley Butler uses critical museology to argue against a colonial politics of domination in museums. Butler argues that colonial museums were both ‘silent, and silencing’ (Butler, 2000, p.76). Colonial museums were silencing as they subjected the artefacts to a Western gaze, only artefacts deemed visual interesting were to be shown. The lack of contextualisation of these artefacts meant that they became art for viewing, not for understanding. Svetlana Alpers creates a theory for the lack of contextualisation, naming it the ‘museum-effect’. In the first museum, there were 11 galleries all in all including the old House of Representatives session hall that showed 2 big paintings, one being Juan Luna’s famous Spolarium. The 1st gallery featured the Philippines religious art from the 17th to 19th century. It contained various paintings, carvings and images of saints or santos. Some displays were damaged but it naturally came from its old age and is not a problem in viewing. The 2nd gallery featured the historical political events that included the Basi Revolt. The 3rd gallery is said to be the Philippine art of the academic and romantic period, in this gallery it featured mostly the great works of Juan Luna. It was nice seeing all the various works of Juan Luna and how abundant this museum is with his works. It’s nice how they also displayed the sculpture of the artist himself because of all the work he’s done. The 4th gallery is made up of works of 19th century Filipino sculptors notably Isabelo Tampinco y Lacandola and his successors. This was one of my favourite galleries because these sculptures are like what I see only on the television or internet, I was glad that I had the chance to see something like this in person. Gallery V is the tribute to our national hero himself, Dr. Jose Rizal. The gallery included not only paintings and images of Rizal, but also his own work including 4 sculptures and one fine drawing. The display that caught our attention was Rizal’s fine drawing of a structure, it was literally a fine drawing because of the details of it and it made me appreciate how talented Rizal really is not only in writing but also in art. Gallery VI contains the work of late contemporaries and artistic successors of the generation of Luna and Hidalgo including Amorsolo. One display here featured Fernando Amorsolo’s unfinished painting of a lady which included a chair and a table that had tools used for painting that is said to be his. With the intention of understanding how Filipinos lived during the Spanish colonial era, we took a class trip to Casa Manila, a reconstructed Spanish colonial mansion of the mid-1800s, having in mind that we would get to see or have a preview of how the architecture was during the Spanish colonial period.
