David Appiah grew up comfortably with his three brothers under the watchful eye of his mother, a nurse. She taught her sons the value of charity and personal sacrifice. A lesson David can’t seem to lose sight of. David’s education took him on a criss cross course of the country up till after his tertiary education. After seeing most of Ghana, David pitched camp in the UK as he sought to broaden his mind. He soon realized that people need help everywhere; he saw images of pain and suffering that made him return home with a dream, a vision to make a difference. He started work with Sight For Africa, a Non-Profit Eye care center because he wanted to do something to alleviate people’s pain. But medicine can only go so far and David quickly realized that people found it difficult to adjust to life in mainstream society after vision correction. He put his money where his mouth is and AID Trust Foundation was born. David has slowly built a reputation for going the extra mile at all costs. It was for this reason that Christabel Ahuma was referred to him by GBC. 18 year old Christabel was preparing for the Basic Education Certificate Examination. She had written 2 sets of mock exams and was looking forward to going to an SHS with a boarding house. She woke up one morning and couldn’t see. She had gone totally blind. When David met her she needed an amount of $6,000 for an ophthalmic surgery to be performed on her in South Africa. Sight for Africa offered to do it at the reduced cost of GHC5,000. This amount was further brought down to GHC900 which David eventually waived as they discovered upon opening her eye that her retina was fully detached and gone beyond repair. Christabel needs to restart her life. David was with Christabel one the day she went to the Akropong School for the Blind for her initial interview and assessment.
