Life Styles Inventory: Oppositional and Power
MGMT -570

Personal Thinking Styles
My Primary Life Style Inventory score is Dominator at the 97th percentile. Following closely behind is Pragmatist and Self-Empowered being equally high at 95. Fortunately, these two scores are a part of the Constructive Scope. Upon review of these three traits I recognize there are trends in the data which lead to my style of leadership and workplace relationships. There are some aspects which I agree with, some which are in conflict with my personality, but choose to be objective and open-minded to the insights that they give in regards to improvement in communication, performance, and professional development.

Noticing how negative these descriptions are, I do recognize only a couple of the descriptions as accurate, some based on contextual events and situations. For some individuals, a lack of ethical and responsible personal or professional relationships may make them less trusting and more dependent of their own efforts; that is one particular train of thought I can relate to. However, I am rarely influenced by the opinions of others, depending on their personal and professional character. One example is, a manager reprimanding an employee for the quality of their work, but the manager themselves do not know how to complete the same work assigned. Furthermore, that manager may not provide any training to improve that performance, thus creating less trust from that direct report to their …show more content…
Unless these types have strong Humanistic-Encouraging (1 o 'clock position) or Affiliative (2 o 'clock position) scores, they can be almost constant critics, relentlessly questioning and shooting down staff ideas (LSI, 2014). With this in mind, I recognize the multitude of opportunities I have to lessen and reduce this phenomena by engaging my staff in more proactive and inclusive ways. My ranking on the LSI reflects my current position on the management that I have received in recent employment, which is not accurate of my personal views on management. I do believe employees should have strong leadership and expectations, but I also believe employees need to be much more proficient in their technical and customer service skills. Managers who are dominant in being Self-Empowered need to ensure there is sufficient collaboration between the Accommodation style to meet organizational goals. I am committed to using the great merits of prestige to encourage my employees to strive for perfection; even though it may be seen as a way to measure worth. I do believe professional and technical work needs to be process-oriented, limiting the errors and improving productivity and opportunity for all to

The Life Styles Inventory survey is a very fascinating way in which one can think of one’s way of actually becoming a constructive leader. The constructive slice is quite an alluring piece of the pie which is where most people would like to be at. But then again, due to actions in life and the work place this may not be the case. One may experience a more higher level in passive / defensive or aggressive / defensive styles which would need more work on to obtain the a better outcome from the survey.…

In my current role as an Area Manager for a large spirts and wine distributor, I am a first line manager of a sales team consisting of five sales consultants. The behavioral viewpoint is what enables me to not only be a successful manager, but to be a successful leader. I believe in open-mindedness and transparency; most importantly, acting with integrity and respect, while promoting inclusion. As mentioned by Abraham Maslow, there is a hierarchy of needs (physiological, safety, love, esteem, and self-actualization), that all humans seek to some extent (Kinicki & Williams, 2011). I believe that promoting better human relations, thus tapping into their needs, definitely can increase workers’ productivity levels significantly. I also firmly agree with the teachings of the late Peter Drucker. Mr. Drucker strongly conveys the message of considering the needs of the organization as a whole, rather than one’s own needs. He explains that it is important to “Listen First, Speak Last” (Kinicki & Williams, 2011). I apply this on a daily basis whenever an employee approaches me with a concern or idea. As stated by Follett, it is…

According to the Life Styles Inventory results, my primary style is conventional, and my backup style is affiliative. I have always been referred to as an “old soul” and being conventional has always been my second nature. Being conventional means you that I appreciate rules and structure. I also am reliable and follow policies. Conventionalism and accounting seem to go hand in hand, so I feel confident I can use this personality trait to succeed in my career path. The results of the LSI test concluded that being affiliative was my backup style. Affiliative means that you have a genuine concern for others, and are friendly, and cooperative. I believe this result is a true representation of me. I am not one to cause waves unless absolutely necessary. I also show a lot of empathy towards others and I am always ready to listen to others concerns. I was a little surprised; however, to see how high I scored in dependent and oppositional. I have always considered myself very independent, and very rarely oppositional. I prefer to work on my own without much help, and I am driven to succeed. These results have made me take a second look at myself, and behaviors so I can work to improve any negative qualities. I believe that my passive/defensive style could be working against my overall effectiveness as a leader. Needing approval, avoiding confrontation, and being dependent, all work against me becoming an effective leader. In my current job, I have…

My “primary” personal thinking style as shown in my circumplex is The Humanistic-Encouraging Style. This style means that I am “accepting of myself, and accept others for who they are without question or criticism” (Human 2010). Humanistic-Encouraging individuals believe they can “assist others in fulfilling their potential by providing a supportive climate that inspires self-improvement” (Human 2010). I believe that this very accurate summation of myself. This can easily be seen at my previous job as a waiter. I was often asked to train new employees because I was considered sensitive to people 's needs, and was willing to devote energy to counseling and coaching others. I also consider this style accurate about my myself because during my time as a Kohls retail shift manager, I tried to inspire my coworkers to think, grow and take responsibility for themselves by demonstrating belief in what my coworkers could accomplish. I always tried to believe when a subordinate told me that they could accomplish setting up a display in a certain amount of hours. My “backup” personal thinking style is The Competitive Style. I believe my backup style of being competitive is what pushes me to be all I can be. Competition is my motivation to succeed. I think I have developed this style by the environment I grew up in. As a child, my friends and I had races to see who could run the fastest, hop scotch competitions, and contests for the best cheerleading routines. Sports also played a major part in my competitiveness. I was motivated to do my very best in everything I did and winning a game always got you a trophy and/or a pizza party afterwards. In the workforce, competition is also used. At my previous job, prizes were given for the individual that took the most phone calls, received the lowest average handle time, etc. The benefits of my healthy competition in the workplace help me produce greater results and better quality of work. I…

Psychologically, management should state clearly their expectations. Their role should be to support, promote flexibility, provide advancement opportunities, and offer praise when it’s due. Employees are more likely to put forth great effort with the knowledge that those efforts will be noticed and reviewed. The energy that management puts into their employees is paramount to creating growth both in the individual and the company. (Robbins, et al, 2011)…
