LIFE IS LIKE A BOX OF CHOCOLATES
LIFE IS LIKE A BOX OF CHOCOLATES
Life is unpredictable. Life is a mystery. “Life is like a box of chocolates.” You never know exactly what’s going to happen next. Each chocolate is like a new day. You never know what is in each chocolate until you bite into it, just like how you bite into each new day. My life has been very surprising some days but nothing compares to last week. Just last week my great grandmother had to be rushed into the hospital because she couldn’t breathe. It was very shocking because she is a really healthy person even though she is 92. The only reason she is in that hospital room is because of the blood clots the doctors found in her lungs. A little cluster of blood is the reason she is on life support today. It’s ironic how blood keeps you alive but also has the ability to kill you. The medication they’ve been treating her with has some drastic side effects for her brain, if she survives. The doctors don’t know if she’ll survive. It’s really hard for me because it’s the first time someone close to me is this ill. I’ve had close relatives pass away, but either they lived in another country or I was really young to feel anything. I’ve heard people say if you talk to the person and give them courage they’ll get better faster. I want to do that but she can’t hear anything because she’s deaf and that makes it harder. I want to remind her of all the fun we’ve had ever since I was born. I still remember the days when I was a little kid and she used to play with me. She used to go against my mom and give me junk food. She loved spoiling me. My mom never liked it but she didn’t dare stop her. She was also the only one that never said no to me. If I told her I wanted to eat a certain Indian food she’d start preparing it right away. If she was tired and I wanted to play hide and seek, she’d hide her tiredness and play with me. If I asked her for $5 she’d give me $10. She never disappointed me and I’ll appreciate that forever. I know she can

Even to this day, I don't know how my grandma had so much love for someone who she could barely remember. Yet, since my grandma's condition was bad I naturally helped out my family with my great grandma. I would bring in and out sodas for her since she had a mad addiction to the fizzy drink, and sometimes I would bring her hot meals. Even though doing all of that was great, my favorite thing to do for her was to keep her company. On the most beautiful of days, we would go out and sit on the neon yellow swing set in front of our house in early afternoons when the leaves were turning a beautiful shade of brown and the weather was just the right temperature. The wind sang alluring songs in your ears as the branches of the lush trees danced to the melody. I can picture it just like it was yesterday. The pond next to us glimmered a light blue color as the swing squeaked in glee. She would sing the same tune each time and i would drift into a world of peace and tranquility where nothing else mattered at that moment. But as a little girl, I took those special moments for granted. I was too oblivious to know that good things don't last forever, they never…

Sadly, the tragic day came when I went to the nursing home and the CNA’s were outside to mom’s room. I asked “if they were getting ready to give her at bath or something?” They would not answer me, just then the nurse came out and told me that mom was gasping and that she could die at any time, so if I needed to call…

Life is full of surprises both good and bad. The biggest surprise of my life came 2 years ago when my mother passed away. Dealing with her death was a very hard thing to do, but I managed to get through it. First thing I had to realize is that acceptance is a major part in dealing with the death of a loved one. I had to understand what happened and not try to live in a fantasy world. I couldn’t pretend that my mother was on vacation, because it would only make things harder. The second thing I had to do was talk to someone about how losing my mother had made me feel. I tried not to shut people out, because I knew it will only lead to depression. Third thing I learn was to do whatever it takes to keep my mother alive in my memory. I had to remember the good times and realize that someday we will be reunited. I spent a lot of time with the people who loved and cared about me. They will be my comfort and shoulder to cry on if things get hard. I was told to never be ashamed to grieve over the loss of my mother. Finally, I didn’t ever let anyone tell me to get over it. We are all…

I was raised by both of my parents in America after we legally travelled from Malaysia. While my father worked a full time job, my mother stayed home and looked after me. At a young age, I had a large portion of the day with just my mother. I was never a neglected child. She taught me to always carry a smile and to look at the positives in life instead of fretting about the negatives. When I was bored, she would stop her daily chores and watch television with me. If I complained of starvation, she would immediately cook or take me out for food. When I was sick, she took care of me and stayed up all night in case of any bad changes. If I wanted a new toy, she would nag about how hard it is to earn money but she will always end up buying it for me. I didn’t realize at the time, but in my heart, she was already an irreplaceable mother.…

When you open a box of assorted chocolates, what do you see? Some people look, and they know that there are some chocolates mixed in that are absolutely horrid, and they do their best to escape them. Others see the candies and know that one of them will be their demise, but they eat them all anyways. However, a few people gaze into the box and see an opportunity for surprise with each morsel. In the movie Forrest Gump, the concept of destiny is viewed by the characters in various different ways.
