Life During The Industrial Revolution

“The Industrial Revolution was another of those extraordinary jumps forward in the story of civilization.” Stephen Gardiner succinctly describes the Industrial Revolution with this quote as a phenomenal turning point in the world. Between the 1700s and the 1800s, Britain’s onset of The Industrial Revolution forever changed life for humanity throughout the world. There were several negative and positive effects of The Industrial Revolution on society. Living conditions, mass production, and public health of the working class were dismal at the start of the Industrial Revolution, but profound dynamic changes occurred creating positive outcomes at the end of the Industrial Revolution. Mass production occurred during the Industrial Revolution because of the following factors, the specialization of human labour (an assembly line), and the dramatic change from human produced goods to machine produced goods. An example of mass production is an assembly line, which was important in order for mass production to occur. During an assembly line, one worker has one job that they perform as efficiently as possible. As a result, an employer can hire anyone with many workers creating manufactured goods. The technological advances of machinery made the assembly line successful. Mass production has generated improvements in the cost, quality, quantity, and assortment of goods accessible to create a high standard of living so that goods are available to all. Life for the working class was significantly changed by mass production. Instead of making their own goods they eventually had purchasing power to buy goods. This was a great improvement adding longevity and an improved quality of life with more access to food and some luxuries that they did not have
