In Fahrenheit 451 not all reading material is banned. In that society the public it is only illegal to read books, and even then only real literature was banned. Remaining was comic books, play books and magazines. Real literature was claimed to be banned because it offended different people. “Colored people don’t like Little Black Sambo. Burn it. White people don’t like Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Burn it. Someone’s written a book on tobacco and cancer of the lungs? The cigarette people are weeping? Burn the book” (Bradbury 59). This part of the book makes the reader wonder if Captain Beatty knows that Montag stole one of the books at the fire the night before. It also makes the reader think did Beatty know that Montag has been collecting books from the houses the Firemen were called to. “I don’t think he knows which book I stole. But how do I chose a substitute? Do I turn in Mr. Jefferson? Mr. Thoreau? Which is least valuable? If I pick a substitute and Beatty does know which I stole, he’ll guess we’ve an entire library here”…

In the beginning of the novel, Montag is introduced to us as a man who goes about his business daily, working as a fireman for a living. With his job comes the responsibility to live by the law, and Montag does that diligently. He puts no thought into the effect his actions may be having on the people of his society, and the comprehensive knowledge he is destroying by burning books. Montag “wanted above all, like the old joke, to shove a marshmallow on a stick in the furnace, while the flapping pigeon-winged books died on the porch and lawn of the house. While the…

Certainly the term 'family' has raised various debates in the modern society and as evident from the study of different cultures, there is now no clear taxonomy of a family unit. From a functionalists point of view, it is a unit of people bound together either biologically or by legal marriage. To support this theory, Murdock defines it as a group consisting of a sexually active heterosexual couple living with their biological or adopted children.(Haralambos M & Langley P).…

In Montag’s society, books are illegal and firemen start fires by burning books instead of putting fires out. Montag clearly states his belief in the law by stating that he would never read books because they are “against the law!” (5) Before he really knew Clarisse, he was very fond of the law, but after he started to understand her, he became a little rebellious. Regardless of meeting Clarisse, Montag always had books hidden away. However, after he started thinking for himself, he grew more familiar with books. Beatty discovered Montag’s books, and went to burn his books and took Montag with him. As they pulled up, Beatty tells Montag that he is “under arrest” for keeping his books a secret and reading them. This shows that people have no real freedom to read books or have any information. Unlike Montag’s society, books are encouraged to be read and available anywhere. For example, there are bookstores like Barnes and Noble and there are electronic devices, called Kindles, specially made for books and reading. Kindles and Barnes and Noble are an example of freedom of books, information, and knowledge. Another example of the freedom we have is an app where people everywhere read and write books. The app is called Wattpad and millions of people read and write books- some books even get published off of this app. This app…

In 1839 as an African American you began a slave and either bought your way out or stayed on the same path as the millions before you. Montag, a prisoner to the shackles of society; begins his journey as a fireman. He stood there with a “Smile still gripped by his face muscles, in the dark”(Bradbury, 2) he breathed in the Kerosene. Montag gets up in the morning and decides he does not want to go to work as a result, he calls in sick. Montag tells Mildred he is thinking about quitting his job, but she doesn't respond. Captain Beatty soon shows up with the intention of checking on how Montag is feeling. In all honesty it seems that he knows that Montag has at least one book. In a casual conversation in which he never directly confronts Montag, Beatty reminds him that books are not only illegal they are, also a waste of time. He then tells Montag that many firemen, at one time or another, steal books however, he says that it is a phase they quickly outgrow. Beatty then recalls the time when people read entire books. As time passed, all the books were condensed into short digests. Books slowly disapeared, and all anyone read were comic books and sex magazines. Before long, books were gone all together. Beatty claims that the government didnt make any formal statement of censorship but advanced technology simply made books useless. Then it was unanimously decided that men should all be alike and equal in intelligence. Since books were “loaded guns” that could give a person extra knowledge, they were all destroyed.…
