Life
As the set designer for The Winslow Boy, I have made several decisions to reflect the characters and to create an accurate re-imagination of a early 1900’s household.

Such as: A warm fireplace adjacent to Arthurs chair, to indicate the warmth and heart of the family. The chair will be placed near to show that Arthur is in a position to look after and protect the family. Arthurs chair will be made out of high quality leather as leather is often used to represent solidity and hardness and masculinity, showing that Arthur is quite a masculine and dominant figure. The chair must be clearly a high quality and long lasting piece of furniture. As if we refer back to the text Arthur mentions he still receives a ‘small pension’ from the bank, meaning Arthur used to work in the bank, which shows he has knowledge on the value of money meaning he perhaps bought the chair as it would last long and be an investment in the long run. The high quality will also help explain to the audience that the Winslow family is quite rich and upper class. Directly on top of the fireplace there shall some old fashioned frames with specific photos. The first, which will be placed on the right, will be of a man, quite old, which is Arthurs father Winslow, to show Arthur and the family have great respect for his father and shows Arthur is a character who strives to be as respected. The second, will be placed in the middle; a large portrait of the 5 members of the Winslow family, Arthur and Catherine on the far right, to emphasize the closeness of Catharine and her father. Then in the centre of the portrait we shall have Grace and Ronnie, the mother and son, too show that these two characters have a close relation and his mother may be doing something motherly like holding Ronnie’s shoulders while he is sat down. And finally in the left hand side, standing in solitude, there’s Dickie. Who will be standing straight smiling confidently to show he is quite an independent and assured character.

Rufus King’s life was well portrayed by the way he lived and his home was a great way of showing that. The outside of the house was an off white color and had a big door as an entrance that demonstrated power. As I entered the house, I noticed the different types of shades the walls. For instance the Parlor, which for us is known as the living room, was very spacious and had great detailing by the fireplace, which represented wealth. The marble was somewhat luxurious and gave the guest a nice impression. The walls were a bright green color and the reason for it was because he felt the brighter the more money and success it brought. In this same room was a portrait of the King family, a finger dipper and a teapot.…

I think that these events foreshadowed Okonkwo’s and the Ibo tribe’s demise because every single one of the events affected Okonkwo negatively and led to some of change in his life. It starts with Okonkwo’s father being a bum in the tribe and neglecting his responsibility to his family. His death was also degrading because his body was thrown in the forbidden forest and Okonkwo always worked towards not becoming someone like him. However, at the end Okonkwo’s “burial” is the same and he becomes the failure he tried to avoid. He considered himself a failure because he was unable to rid the tribe of the colonists because he could see that the culture was diminishing but he failed to bring the tribe to fight after his exile. He was exiled because he killed a boy at the wedding which he was invited to after he killed Ikemefuna so that he could clear his mind with a distraction. Overall, every event led to something which foreshadowed Okonkwo’s demise as well as the tribe’s.…

Certainly the term 'family' has raised various debates in the modern society and as evident from the study of different cultures, there is now no clear taxonomy of a family unit. From a functionalists point of view, it is a unit of people bound together either biologically or by legal marriage. To support this theory, Murdock defines it as a group consisting of a sexually active heterosexual couple living with their biological or adopted children.(Haralambos M & Langley P).…

    Meaning of Life

What is the meaning of life? The answer to this question has sought over since mankind became capable of exercising their brain capacity past a level of primal instinct. In general life is rather meaningless, we all simply exist together on this planet. But before one dwells on the pointlessness of human existence, they should think about the purpose of each individual person in our society. We create goals for ourselves; we all have a role to play in our society. In a sense, we choose our future and in doing so, give ourselves a purpose to live. The purpose of human existence in general may be absent, but in our society and through our goals and achievements, I believe each individual creates their own purpose.…
