Liesel Commentary
This passage has completely changed my thoughts on Liesel because I have never seen her help someone by using that much patience. As a result, I feel that the author might be foreshadowing that Liesel is slowly becoming a better person rather than a criminal who steals from others. Also, I can feel how difficult it is for her to light a cigarette for the man because of the personification and imagery that the author had used. Therefore I can picture that the smoke is crawling into her mouth and slowly approaching her throat. As a whole, this passage makes me believe that Liesel will become a better person as time goes by.

As she stared at The Grave Digger’s Handbook, “touching the print inside, she had no idea what it was saying.”(38).
