Many people think that media and communications is not a “proper subject” that should be studied at university, like maths or English. For this assignment produce a letter to a “non-believer”, arguing why you think it is a valuable and worthwhile subject to study. We are looking for a sophisticated argument, just saying that it will help you get a job isn’t enough. Think critically about why knowledge about the media in today’s society is important. The word limit is 1500 words. Dear Mr. Skeptic,

In the past weeks, as coordinator of the faculty of Media and Communications at this institution, I have had numerous queries with regard to the relative importance of the courses taught by this department. There appears to be urgency to address a few concepts behind the study of media. I am addressing this paper to the individuals of the general public and the academics that have been questioning the validity and indispensability of the study of these disciplines.

In Aristotele’s words, ‘anyone who cannot lead the common life or is so selfsufficient as not to need to, and therefore does not partake of society, is either a beast or a god’; humans are social beings, and consequently, are defined by their interactions and discourses. Media and communication is thus undoubtedly vital for society’s well being. It is the mean by which information, knowledge, and personal opinions travel across the globe and across populations. Without communication, society is by definition flawed, proving radically the importance of this discipline. Advances in technology have completely transformed the way we interact, and expanded the reach of information sharing; media and communication is now more than ever a subject that deserves equal respect, much like maths and history, as it has become an essential presence in our everyday lives.
